Chicago: A City for All Seasons
As my eldest gets ready to jet off on her J1 summer in Chicago, I can’t help but reminisce about my own J1 days many years ago on Cape Cod. Different coast, different skyline, same sense of adventure. Hearing about her plans has reminded me just how special that first long American summer is, and how the place you choose, becomes the backdrop to memories that stay with you for life. I’m a big fan of Chicago and think it’s a brilliant destination a trip at almost any time of year. From icy winter days with twinkling lights and steaming coffee cups to balmy evenings by the lake in July, Chicago really is a city for all seasons.
When I think of Chicago, I think of sport, music, shopping, food and fun. It’s a city that knows how to live well, whatever the weather is doing.
Spring: When Chicago Goes Green
One of my favourite memories of Chicago is celebrating St Patrick’s Day in March. The city leans wholeheartedly into it: they literally dye the river bright green and, for a day, it feels like the entire city has Irish roots.
Pubs are buzzing, parades wind through the streets and there is a real sense of celebration after the long winter. It is a wonderful time to visit if you like a bit of craic and a festive atmosphere mixed with all the usual big-city attractions.
Spring is also a lovely shoulder season for:
- Strolling along the Riverwalk as the city starts to thaw out
- Exploring Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (The Bean) with fewer crowds
- Taking an architecture boat tour on the river, wrapped up in a cosy jacket, learning the stories behind that famous skyline
You get that sense of energy and anticipation: summer is on the way, but the city still feels like it belongs to the locals.

Summer: Festivals, Beaches & J1 Memories
Summer is when Chicago truly comes alive with outdoor living. It is no wonder it is such a popular J1 destination. Long, warm days spill into buzzing nights, and the whole city seems to move outdoors.
Chicago in summer is about:
- Lollapalooza & music festivals: Grant Park turns into a sea of stages, food stalls and music lovers.
- Beaches on Lake Michigan: Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach offer golden sand and a lake so vast it looks like the ocean. Beach volleyball, sunbathing, paddleboarding and skyline views are all part of the package.
- Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs: A Cubs game is the quintessential summer experience. Think hot dogs, craft beer, sunshine and that old-school ballpark atmosphere. Even if you are not a die-hard baseball fan, it is so much fun.
Summer also makes Chicago a perfect base for mini road
trips. You can escape the city for a couple of days and head up the coast of
Lake Michigan to the quaint towns of St Joseph, Saugatuck and beyond.
Expect:
- Cute main streets with independent shops and ice cream parlours
- White-sand beaches and dunes
- Vineyards, picket fences and a slower, nostalgic small-town feel
It is an ideal contrast to the big-city buzz, and very doable as a weekend escape.

Autumn & Winter: Cosy, Sparkling & Seriously Stylish
Chicago does not shut down when the temperatures drop, it just switches personality.
Autumn is beautiful for:
- Strolling through Lincoln Park or along the lakefront with the leaves turning
- Catching a Chicago Bears game or ice hockey match
- Enjoying rooftop bars with heaters and blankets, plus those dramatic sunsets over the city
Winter though, is when the city feels downright magical:
- The Christmas lights and decorations turn the streets into a festive wonderland
- The Magnificent Mile becomes a paradise for shopping, with every brand you can think of and sparkling window displays
- The Christkindlmarket and winter pop-ups bring a European-style festive feel to the Midwest
Yes, it can be cold, but that is half the charm. Warm up with deep-dish pizza, steaming bowls of ramen, cosy cocktail bars and world-class restaurants. Chicago is a serious food city, so winter is the perfect excuse to eat your way around it.

Big City Thrills: Things You Must Do
Whatever time of year you visit, Chicago offers a brilliant mix of big sights and local experiences. Some favourites to consider:
- Willis Tower Skydeck: Stand on the glass floor and look straight down at the city beneath your feet. Heart-stopping but unforgettable.
- 360 Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Observatory): Incredible views over the lake and skyline, plus the TILT experience for thrill-seekers.
- Chicago River Architecture Cruise: A must for first-timers. You get an entirely different perspective from the water and a real appreciation of how beautiful the architecture is.
- Millennium Park & The Bean: Iconic, photogenic and fun. In winter you can ice skate nearby, in summer it is all about outdoor art and free events.
- Navy Pier: Ferris wheel views, rides, restaurants, live entertainment and fireworks in summer. Very family-friendly.
- Lincoln Park Zoo: One of the oldest zoos in the US and free to enter, set against a stunning city backdrop.
- The Art Institute of Chicago: Ideal for a chilly day, with a world-class collection and peaceful galleries to wander.
And then there is the food: deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs, incredible steakhouses, cool neighbourhood brunch spots and every cuisine under the sun. It is a city where you can eat very, very well.
Live Music, Sports & Nightlife
If you love live music, Chicago will spoil you. It is a city built on blues and jazz, but you will also find:
- Intimate blues clubs where you can feel the music reverberate through the room
- Jazz lounges with late-night sets and candlelit tables
- Indie venues showcasing up-and-coming bands
- Big-name concerts in arenas and at festivals
Add in the sports scene, and you have a city that lives for entertainment. Whether it is the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the White Sox, the Bears or the Bulls, there is nearly always a game to catch somewhere.
Nightlife ranges from speakeasy-style cocktail bars to laid-back neighbourhood pubs and sleek rooftop terraces with jaw-dropping views.

Perfect For Multi Centre Trips
One of the big advantages of Chicago is how easy it is to combine with other US destinations.
It works beautifully as:
- A starting point for a Great Lakes road trip
- A twin-centre with New York, Boston or Washington DC
- A north-meets-south combo with an easy hop down to Nashville, for live music and Southern charm
- A gateway to exploring Route 66, which famously starts (or ends) in Chicago
Whether you want city and beach, city and music, or city and great outdoors, Chicago slots into a multi centre itinerary effortlessly.
Chicago is a city that can be revisited at different times of year and feel completely new each time.
If you are dreaming of your own American escape, whether it is a Chicago city break, a J1-inspired summer adventure, or a multi centre trip taking in places like Nashville and the lakefront towns of Michigan, I would love to help you plan it.
