Packing for a Family Lapland Adventure
What You Really Need for a 3-Night Arctic Escape
The time has finally come and Lapland is calling! For families setting off to this snowy wonderland, excitement is sky-high. But with the dazzling images of reindeer, glittering snow, and maybe even a glimpse of the Northern Lights, the same question always pops up - what do you really need to pack for a short stay in the Artic? Let me help you take the stress out of the prep, so you can focus on the magic. Here’s what to know before you pile on the hats and gloves and jet off to Lapland.
First things first, the golden rule in Lapland is layers, layers, layers. As they used to tell me in Italy Vestirsi a cipolla! (dress like an onion - in layers). Temperatures can dip surprisingly low, but that’s all part of the fun as you’ll be wrapped up and toasty, building snowmen and dashing through the snow like pros. Start with snug thermal base layers, add a couple of warm fleece or wool jumpers, and top everything off with a proper winter parka and durable snow trousers or salopettes. Don’t forget lots of thick socks (wool or thermal is a winner), and if you have room, pop in some spare gloves or mittens – wet hands are no fun on a husky ride!
Snow boots are essential, think waterproof, insulated, with good grips for icy paths (and inevitable snowball fights). For little ones, make sure their hats cover their ears, and bring a neck warmer or balaclava to help with any biting wind. Inside your cosy accommodation, warm but casual clothes and something comfy for lounging will make evenings feel just as special.

Even in the Arctic, there’s time for relaxation. Many resorts and lodges have their own saunas or jacuzzi, so pop those swimming costumes into your bag. Trust us, slipping into a steamy sauna after a frosty adventure is one of the best bits of Finnish hospitality.
Now, a quick word on personal comforts. Pack a good moisturiser and some lip balm – the air is wonderfully crisp, but it’ll dry your skin in no time. Surprising as it may sound, a high SPF sunscreen and some sunglasses are absolute musts too. Sunshine bouncing off all that white snow can catch you off guard, especially during those cavorting daylight hours.
Family adventures mean keeping everyone happy, so consider a daypack for spare layers, snacks and your camera. If you’re travelling with younger children, don’t forget the familiar comforts – a favourite soft toy or bedtime storybook will help everyone settle in at night, getting them ready for another day with Santa and his elves.

And just a little reminder, whilst Lapland is legendary for childhood magic, it isn’t just for the little ones. For anyone dreaming of an adults-only snowy escape, Lapland is equally enchanting for grown-ups. Think tranquil log cabins nestled in the forest, exhilarating snowmobiling, husky adventures, sophisticated wine-tasting dinners, spa treatments and the unrivalled thrill of chasing the Northern Lights. Whether you’re marking a special occasion or simply want the ultimate winter romance, Lapland promises a unique and unforgettable experience for adults too.
Finally, do double check with your Travel Counsellor what’s included in your Lapland package. Many trips provide specialist winter gear (snowsuits, boots, mitts) for outdoor activities, which can save space in your luggage and ensure everyone stays comfortable. Just ask if you’re not sure, that’s what we're here for!
Lapland is pure magic, and with the right packing, you can make every snowy moment count, whether you’re bringing the whole family or soaking up the serenity on an adult-only escape.
