Where to Stay in Tokyo with Kids: 3 Best Family-Friendly Areas

Tracy O'Donoghue on 23 Apr 2026

In this guide, I’ll break down the three best areas to stay in Tokyo with kids based on real experience living in and exploring the city: Ueno, Shibuya (including Ebisu), and Roppongi.

I lived in Tokyo for 4 years and explored most of the city in depth, so I know how much your experience changes depending on where you stay - especially when you’re travelling with children. Tokyo is safe, efficient, and exciting, but it’s also huge. Choosing the right neighbourhood is one of the most important decisions when planning a family trip.

If you’re trying to figure out where to stay in Tokyo with kids, these are the three best family-friendly areas that work well for comfort, convenience, and access to attractions.

Ueno — Best overall area to stay in Tokyo with kids

Ueno is one of the most practical and family-friendly neighbourhoods in Tokyo, especially for first-time visitors. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than central districts, while still being extremely well connected.

The highlight is Ueno Park, one of the largest green spaces in the city. It’s perfect for families because it gives kids space to run around, take breaks from sightseeing, and enjoy a slower pace. Inside the park, you’ll also find museums, temples, ponds, and cultural attractions that can easily fill a full day.

From a logistics point of view, Ueno is also one of the easiest places to stay in Tokyo with kids. It has direct access to Narita Airport, strong train connections across the city, and a wide range of hotels that tend to offer more space and better value than central Tokyo.

Best for: families with young kids, first-time visitors, and travellers looking for the easiest place to stay in Tokyo.

Shibuya (and Ebisu) — Best central area for active families

Shibuya is one of the most famous neighbourhoods in Tokyo and offers a very modern, high-energy city experience. It is also one of the best-connected transport hubs in Tokyo, making it easy to explore other parts of the city.

For families, it works best for older kids and teenagers; for younger kids, nearby Ebisu is a better choice - still lively but calmer, more residential feel with some playgrounds, lots of restaurants, and easily accessible if staying near the station.

The main drawback is that accommodation in Shibuya/Ebisu is usually smaller and more expensive compared to other family-friendly areas in Tokyo.

Best for: travellers who want a central, lively base in Tokyo and have a larger budget.

Roppongi — Best area for comfort and central access

Roppongi is often known for nightlife, but during the day it’s a very convenient and comfortable base for families. In fact, it has a very international feel with several embassies and international schools nearby.

Its biggest advantage is location. Roppongi is very central, which makes it easy to travel around Tokyo efficiently. This is particularly useful when you’re visiting multiple attractions in different districts.

The area also offers modern attractions such as Tokyo Midtown, museums, art galleries, and a large selection of international restaurants. There are also quieter residential pockets and small parks that make it more suitable for families than most people expect.

However, some parts of Roppongi are nightlife-focused, so it’s important to choose hotels in the right part of the neighbourhood when travelling with children.

Best for: families with older kids, short stays, or travellers prioritising comfort and central convenience.

Final thoughts: Best neighbourhoods in Tokyo for families

From my experience living in Tokyo and exploring the city extensively, the best area really depends on your travel style and budget:

  • Ueno → best overall place to stay in Tokyo with kids (easy, green, affordable)
  • Shibuya/Ebisu → best central area for families who want energy and convenience
  • Roppongi → best for comfort, location, and international feel

Tokyo is an incredible city, but choosing the right neighbourhood makes family travel significantly smoother and more enjoyable.
