Where to Eat in Tokyo with Kids: A Simple Family Guide

Tracy O'Donoghue on 23 Apr 2026

I lived in Tokyo for 4 years and explored the city extensively, so I know that eating out with kids is much easier than most people expect. Tokyo has a world-famous food scene, but what often surprises families is how accessible, fast, and kid-friendly it actually is once you know where to go.

1. Casual Japanese restaurants (the easiest option for families)

Across Tokyo, you’ll find countless casual Japanese chain restaurants that are perfect for families. These places are fast, affordable, and very welcoming to children.

Popular options include:

  • Sukiya / Yoshinoya / CocCo Curry (rice bowls, beef bowls, curry)
  • Saizeriya (Italian-style, very kid-friendly)
  • Royal Host (family-style restaurant with kids’ menus and several food choices)

Why they work

  • Quick service (no long waits)
  • Simple menus with photos or pictures
  • Highchairs and family seating
  • Very affordable

Best for: everyday meals, tired travel days, fussy eaters

2. Conveyor belt sushi (best fun dining experience for kids)

One of the easiest and most enjoyable meals with kids in Tokyo is conveyor belt sushi (kaiten sushi).  It’s fast, interactive, and perfect for families who want something fun but low stress.

Two of the best family-friendly chains are:

  • Genki Sushi
  • Kura Sushi

Why they work

  • Fast service once you're seated
  • Order by touchscreen in many places = easy
  • Small portions = easy to try lots of dishes
  • Fun, interactive experience
  • Very affordable compared to formal sushi restaurants

Best for: fun family meals, introducing kids to Japanese food

3. Ramen shops (surprisingly family-friendly)

Ramen shops are everywhere in Tokyo, and many are much more relaxed than people expect.

Best ones we’ve tried:

  • Tsukomo in Ebisu (famous for its cheese ramen – they also have side options such as char sui rice bowls and gyoza)
  • Ippudo (chain restaurant, some locations have kids' portions)

Why they work

  • Fast service
  • Fun experience for kids
  • Often very casual atmosphere
  • Many places will allow you to order by machine with English translation

Tip: Go slightly earlier (before peak lunch/dinner) to avoid queues.

Best for: fun, quick, authentic meals

4. Food courts & department stores (hidden gem for families)

One of the easiest ways to eat in Tokyo with kids is using department store food floors and food courts.

Great locations include:

  • Shibuya Scramble Square
  • Aqua City & Diver City, Odaiba
  • Tokyo Station GRANSTA
  • Tokyo Midtown & Roppongi Hills

Why they work

  • Variety of food in one place
  • Clean, organised seating areas
  • Easy for mixed preferences in families

Best for: indecisive families, rainy days, quick meals

5. Western and international restaurants (for fussy eaters)

Tokyo has plenty of international food options, especially in central areas like Roppongi and Shibuya.

Common family-friendly choices:

  • Pizza restaurants
  • Burger chains
  • Café-style brunch spots

Why they work

  • Familiar food for children
  • English menus often available

Best for: younger kids or first few days adjusting to Japan

6. Convenience stores (seriously underrated)

It might sound simple, but Japanese convenience stores (konbini) like 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart are a lifesaver for families.

Why they work

  • Fresh sandwiches, rice balls, noodles
  • Affordable meals
  • Open 24/7
  • Great for snacks and backup meals

Final thoughts

Eating out in Tokyo with kids is much easier than most people expect. Once you know where to go, Tokyo becomes one of the most enjoyable cities in the world for family food adventures.
