Cape Town, the Garden Route and Eastern Cape Safari

14 nights from €4,430 per person

South Africa’s Garden Route brings city, wine country, coastline and wildlife into one self-drive journey. This 14-night couples trip begins with four nights in Cape Town, follows the road through Franschhoek, Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay, then finishes with three nights at a riverside game reserve in the Eastern Cape.

Highlights

  • Explore Cape Town using an included hop-on hop-off tour, with stops near Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the city centre.
  • Spend two nights in Franschhoek, surrounded by vineyards and restaurants in the heart of the Cape Winelands.
  • Cross the mountains to Oudtshoorn, where the semi-desert landscape feels completely different from the coast.
  • Stay three nights in Plettenberg Bay, with long beaches, coastal viewpoints and the forests around nearby Knysna within reach.
  • Follow the Garden Route east through Port Elizabeth before finishing at Sibuya Game Reserve.
  • Spend three nights in a full-board River Camp, reached through the reserve’s riverside setting.

Cape Town

Cape Town is one of those cities where the setting shapes almost every day. Take the cableway up Table Mountain when the weather is clear, walk around the V&A Waterfront or follow the Atlantic coast towards Camps Bay and Clifton. The included sightseeing bus makes it easier to connect the city centre, mountain and coastline without using the car for every trip.

From Cape Town to Franschhoek

Leaving Cape Town, the route moves into the Cape Winelands and Franschhoek, a small town surrounded by vineyards and mountains. Spend your time visiting local estates, booking a long lunch or using the wine tram to move between selected stops without driving. Evenings are centred around the town’s restaurants and walkable main street.

Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo

The road then crosses into the Klein Karoo, a drier inland region framed by mountain passes. Oudtshoorn is known for its ostrich farms and the Cango Caves, a network of limestone chambers outside the town. The drive itself is a major part of this section, with wide valleys and rocky mountain scenery replacing the vineyards.

Plettenberg Bay and the Garden Route

Plettenberg Bay gives you three nights beside the Indian Ocean. Walk along Robberg Beach, follow part of the Robberg Nature Reserve peninsula for coastal views or spend a day exploring the forests and lagoon around Knysna. This is the point in the journey where longer beach time and shorter local drives fit naturally into the route.

Eastern Cape and Sibuya

After an overnight stop in Port Elizabeth, continue to Kenton-on-Sea for the final three nights at Sibuya Game Reserve. River Camp is reached through the reserve’s boat-arrival system and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. It gives the journey a complete change of setting after the cities and coast, with the final days spent away from the main Garden Route towns.
