Planning a Mauritius Honeymoon or Holiday

Karen Pugh on 15 Jan 2026

Mauritius is one of those destinations that really surprised me. I’d always thought of it as a classic beach destination, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s a place where you can mix beautiful beaches with exploring the island, which makes it a great option if you don’t want to sit still for a full week. If you’re thinking about a Mauritius honeymoon or holiday, let's go!

Why Choose Mauritius?

Mauritius has that tropical island vibe, but with more variety than people expect. You’ve got:

  • long stretches of beach and calm lagoons
  • lush interiors and national parks
  • a wide range of hotels and resorts across different budgets

It’s a destination where you can do very little… or quite a lot, depending on your mood.

Where to Stay in Mauritius

Mauritius has a huge range of hotels, and this is where the trip really comes together. You’ll find everything from great value all-inclusive resorts to stylish boutique hotels and larger resorts with lots of facilities to quieter, more luxurious options for couples

I 've stayed in both a relaxed all-inclusive (Zilwa Attitude) and a more high-end resort (The Oberoi Beach Resort), and it showed just how different the experience can be depending on where you stay. That’s why choosing the right hotel is so important here.

Is Mauritius Just for Honeymoons?

Mauritius is often seen as just a honeymoon destination, but it works just as well for other types of trip!

For couples and honeymoons: It’s a lovely mix of beach, good hotels and the option to explore a bit more than somewhere like the Maldives. One thing to note, there are only a small number of adults-only resorts, so if that’s important, it’s something to factor in early.

For families: There are a ton of family-friendly resorts with great facilities and save beaches - so it’s a really easy option for a beautiful family holiday.

When To Go

Mauritius is a year round destination although some months are better than others

  • May to early June and September to November are generally the best times to visit, with drier and more comfortable weather
  • November to April is warmer and more humid, with a higher chance of rain and a small risk of a cyclone
  • June to August is 'winter' but with temperatures still in the early 20s - perfect if you don't love weather that's too hot

I travelled in March, one of the wetter months, and still had plenty of sunshine with just short showers here and there!

What to Do in Mauritius

There’s more to do here than people expect, especially if you like mixing things up a bit. To name a few, you’ve got:

  • Boat trips to offshore islands and snorkelling spots
  • Black River Gorges National Park for hiking and scenery
  • Port Louis for markets and a bit of history
  • Water sports included at many hotels

You can easily break up your beach time with a few days of exploring.

Where to Combine with Mauritius

Mauritius works really well on its own as a beautiful beach honeymoon or holiday, but some of my favourite combinations include:

  • A dream road trip and safari in South Africa (a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon is one of my favourite combinations!)
  • East Africa - think Kenya or Tanzania safari with Mauritius
  • adding a Dubai or Middle East stopover on the way

Planning Your Mauritius Honeymoon or Holiday

Mauritius has a lot of choice and I can help with things like:

  • which part of the island suits you best
  • choosing between all-inclusive or half board
  • the overall style of hotel
  • tagging it on to a trip of a lifetime in Africa
