Istanbul in 48 Hours
Istanbul in 48 Hours
In May 2025, I was fortunate enough to visit Istanbul on a familiarisation (FAM) trip, travelling with Turkish Airlines from Dublin. Over 48 unforgettable hours, I explored some of the city's most iconic landmarks, sampled incredible Turkish cuisine, cruised between two continents on the Bosphorus, and discovered why Istanbul continues to captivate visitors from around the world. Here is a look at my journey through this fascinating city where East meets West.
As a travel agent, I am always looking for destinations that truly deliver on culture, history, food and value for money. In May 2025, I had the opportunity to visit Istanbul on a FAM (familiarisation) trip, travelling with Turkish Airlines from Dublin, and the city exceeded every expectation.
Our journey began in Turkish Airlines Business Class, where excellent service, comfortable seating and one of the best inflight meals I have ever experienced set the tone for the trip. Upon arrival, Istanbul Airport impressed with its modern design and efficiency before a short transfer brought us to the Sura Design Hotel in the heart of Sultanahmet.
Staying in Sultanahmet proved to be the perfect choice. Within walking distance of the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Grand Bazaar, it offered easy access to Istanbul's most iconic attractions.
Over three days, we explored the rich history of the city, from the Byzantine splendour of the Hagia Sophia to the treasures of Topkapi Palace and the magnificent architecture of the Blue Mosque. We wandered through the colourful streets of Balat, admired panoramic views from Pierre Loti Hill, and experienced the energy and excitement of the Grand Bazaar.
One of the highlights of the trip was a private yacht cruise along the Bosphorus Strait. Seeing the city from the water, with Europe on one side and Asia on the other, was a truly unforgettable experience and showcased the unique position Istanbul holds between two continents.
The food throughout the trip was exceptional. Traditional Turkish mezze quickly became a favourite, with every meal offering fresh ingredients, incredible flavours and warm hospitality. From local restaurants in Sultanahmet to waterfront dining overlooking the Bosphorus, Istanbul proved to be a fantastic destination for food lovers.
My Tips for Istanbul
- Stay in the Sultanahmet area for easy access to the main sights.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes as the city is hilly and sightseeing involves plenty of walking.
- Allow extra time for airport transfers due to traffic.
- Pre-book major attractions and excursions, especially during busy periods.
- Bring a scarf or shawl when visiting mosques.
- Don't leave without trying traditional Turkish mezze and local cuisine.
As a travel agent, visiting destinations firsthand allows me to provide genuine recommendations and insights to my clients. Istanbul offers an incredible mix of history, culture, cuisine and hospitality, making it ideal for city breaks, couples, families and history enthusiasts alike.
After just 48 hours, I left wanting to see more. Istanbul is a city that seamlessly blends the old and the new, and it is a destination I would confidently recommend to anyone looking for an unforgettable travel experience.
