Planning a Dream Maldives Honeymoon or Holiday

Karen Pugh on 21 Jan 2026

The Maldives is one of those trips that looks incredible online and I can confirm it's just as magic in real life (Yes, I'm obsessed!). It's one of the most popular destinations I get asked about. But what many people don’t realise is how different each island and resort is and it can make or break your experience - whether you're a couple, family or even a group! Some islands are tiny and ultra-quiet with just a handful of villas, others feel much bigger with multiple restaurants and a ton of things to do. If you’re thinking about a Maldives honeymoon or holiday, let's go!

Why Choose The Maldives?

The Maldives really is that classic desert island 'castaway' escape.

  • Overwater villas with steps straight into the lagoon.
  • The bluest water you’ve ever seen
  • Powder-soft white sand beaches
  • Snorkelling with tropical fish, turtles and reef sharks
  • Doing very little and loving every minute of it!

Although you'd be surprised at the number of things you can actually do on holidays in the Maldives if you're not the kind of person to sit still for long! If you’re adventure seekers you might think the Maldives is not for you but I bet I can find a resort you’ll love!

Water slides? Dolphin Spotting? Paragliding? Scuba diving? Underwater spas? Jet skiing? A Maldives honeymoon or holiday has all this and more!

But for me, what makes the Maldives so special is how easy it is to switch off. There’s no pressure to sightsee or move around. Once you arrive, everything slows right down and your only job is to enjoy paradise!

The Maldives a destination I know very well - most recently I spent 12 nights across 3 resorts (Huvafen Fushi, Siyam World and Sun Siyam Iru Fushi) in 2025. My own Maldives holiday highlights are swimming straight from the villa, snorkelling along the reef, lazy lunches, dolphin spotting, sunset drinks, early nights and stargazing. Just Magic!

Is The Maldives Just For Honeymoons?

A Maldives honeymoon for me is pure perfection but what a lot of people don't know is that it's actually a fantastic beach holiday for families and friends too with many resorts catering from different kinds of holidaymakers... paradise is for everyone!

For couples and honeymoons: It’s hard to beat. Privacy, beautiful villas, incredible scenery  - the perfect post wedding escape. It's worth knowing that not all Maldives honeymoon hotels are adults-only (in fact there are very few) but many are adult orientated.

For families: There are some fantastic family-friendly resorts in the Maldives, but not all islands are suited to kids, so choosing the right one is key.

This is where the Maldives can be confusing! All the islands look amazing, but in reality, the experience can vary quite a lot depending on what kind of trip you want. Having stayed in very different types of resorts, I’ve seen first-hand how varied the vibe can be from resort to resort and I can help narrow things down, because the right island resort is the most important decision you'll make!

When To Go To The Maldives

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but there are some general patterns.

  • December to April is the dry season and tends to have the best weather and is the peak season to visit.
  • May to October is considered rainy season, but I’ve travelled in summer and still had lots of sunshine between short showers and the occasional thunderstorm. Prices are a lot cheaper, too, which is why many travellers go there in the rainy season.

What To Combine With The Maldives

While the Maldives works beautifully as a standalone trip, many of my clients choose to combine it with another destination.

City stopovers

A short stop somewhere like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or even Istanbul works really well to break up the journey. You get a couple of nights of great hotels, dining, shopping and culture before or after the beach.

Asia combinations

A Maldives honeymoon or holiday with somewhere else in Asia works perfectly - Maldives and Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand, Maldives and Bali, Maldives and Vietnam are some of my all time favourite honeymoon combinations. Perfect for culture, history, scenery and activities before finishing with a week of pure relaxation.

Safari and Maldives

For a true bucket list trip, a dream safari and the Maldives is hard to beat. There aren’t direct flights between Africa and the Maldives, but it can work well via the Middle East if you have the time and the extra budget.

Planning Your Maldives Trip

When it comes to Maldives resorts, there are a few factors in picking 'the one':

  • choosing the right island
  • deciding on the best all inclusive (or not!)
  • choosing an adults only island (or not!)
  • picking the right villa type
  • understanding transfers
  • matching something to your budget

And that's where I come in! There are over 150 resorts in the Maldives and I’ll help you choose the right one for your perfect Maldives honeymoon or holiday escape. I'll take care of all the finer details, so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy it.

Feedback from a recent Maldives honeymoon...

"Karen was the shining light we so desperately needed!!! Amid all the chaos of wedding planning, she made honeymoon planning easy and exciting. We were reassured from our very first conversation. Karen listened to our 'ideal honeymoon' scenario and offered us lots of options, with clear pros and cons for each, to ensure we made the right decision for us. She was always available for a call to discuss any queries we had and took care of absolutely everything! We look forward to working with Karen in the future to plan our next trip."
