Silver Shadow

Silver Shadow Review: Classic Luxury with a Different Pace

But is it the right ship for you

Jill Rodger on 13 Aug 2026

If you're considering a luxury cruise with Silversea, you might be wondering whether Silver Shadow is the right ship for you. I recently spent five nights sailing from Palma to Nice, calling at Barcelona, Palamós, Sète and Marseille, and while there was plenty to love, what stood out most was how different this experience felt from many other luxury cruises. Here's my honest review of a ship that proves luxury isn't one-size-fits-all.

One thing I always say to my clients is this:

Luxury doesn't automatically mean it's the right ship for you.

After spending five nights onboard Silversea's Silver Shadow, sailing from Palma to Nice with calls into Barcelona, Palamós, Sète and Marseille, I came away feeling exactly that.

Did I enjoy the cruise? Absolutely.

Would I recommend Silver Shadow? Without hesitation... to the right person.

Because this isn't a ship trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, it offers a very particular style of luxury that many guests absolutely love.

Small Ship, Big Advantage

The biggest surprise for me wasn't the suites, the food or even the service.

It was how immersive the itinerary felt.

With just over 380 guests onboard, Silver Shadow can berth in ports that larger cruise ships simply can't access. Rather than spending precious holiday time on lengthy shuttle buses or tender operations, you're often stepping straight off the ship into the heart of your destination.

Over five nights we wandered the colourful streets of Palamós, browsed the markets of Sète, explored Marseille's Old Port and Le Panier, and enjoyed an incredibly long day in Barcelona, where the ship didn't sail until 11pm.

That later departure completely changes the feel of a port day. There's no rushing back for dinner. You can enjoy the city as it starts to cool down, have an evening meal ashore if you wish, and experience destinations at a much more relaxed pace.

For travellers who cruise because they genuinely want to explore, that's a huge advantage.

The Service Really Is Exceptional

Luxury is often talked about in terms of marble bathrooms and champagne. For me, it's about how people make you feel.

Silver Shadow excels here.

The crew-to-guest ratio is almost one member of crew for every guest, and it really shows. There always seems to be someone available before you've even realised you need anything. Service never felt forced or over the top; it was simply attentive, genuine and incredibly polished.

Every suite comes with a dedicated butler, and while I wasn't sure how much I'd use this service before boarding, it quickly became clear that it's the small touches that make the difference.

Returning after a long, hot day exploring Marseille to find my suite transformed with a beautifully prepared bubble bath was one of those lovely, unexpected moments that made me smile.

VIP Bath Set up

It's personal without being intrusive. Exactly as luxury service should be.

Little Touches That Make Life Easier

One feature that deserves far more attention is the complimentary self-service laundry.

It may not sound glamorous, but if you're travelling for several weeks or combining a cruise with a land holiday, it's brilliant.

The laundry rooms are immaculate, with high-quality washing machines, dryers, irons and plenty of space to fold clothes.

Being able to refresh your wardrobe midway through a trip means packing lighter and travelling more comfortably.

Sometimes it's these practical details that make the biggest difference.

Dining Without the Formality

Silversea offers several excellent dining venues, giving guests plenty of variety throughout the voyage.

One of my favourites was The Grill.

During the day it's wonderfully relaxed, while in the evening it offers the famous "Hot Rocks" experience, where guests cook premium meats and seafood on volcanic stones at their table.

Importantly, it's also one of the more casual dining options onboard.

If the thought of dressing formally every evening puts you off luxury cruising, The Grill offers a much more relaxed alternative while still delivering excellent food and service.

It strikes a lovely balance between luxury and comfort.

The main restaurant was consistently excellent, serving beautifully presented dishes with changing menus each evening, while La Terrazza offered some of the best Italian food I've had at sea and you can dine outside which is magical when the sun is setting. There really is something to suit every mood.

So, Did I Love the Ship?

If I'm being completely honest... not quite. But that's not a criticism.

Silver Shadow is an older, classic luxury ship, and you feel that throughout. Guests looking for huge open-air spaces, multiple pool decks, endless entertainment or contemporary design may find it a little quieter and more inward facing than newer luxury ships entering the market.

Personally, I missed having more outdoor spaces to simply sit with a coffee or a drink and watch the world go by. Aside from the pool deck and a small aft terrace, there aren't many places to relax outside, and on a Mediterranean cruise, I found myself wishing for more.

However, many experienced luxury cruisers actively seek out ships exactly like this because they appreciate the intimate atmosphere, traditional elegance and personalised service.

Neither approach is right or wrong.

It's simply about matching the ship to the traveller.

My Final Thoughts

Silver Shadow reminded me why choosing a cruise isn't about booking the most luxurious ship.

It's about finding the right luxury ship.

If your priorities are immersive itineraries, exceptional service, elegant dining, generous inclusions and a genuinely relaxing atmosphere, Silver Shadow delivers beautifully.

If, however, you prefer contemporary design, expansive outdoor spaces and a livelier onboard atmosphere, I'd probably steer you towards one of Silversea's newer ships instead.

And that's exactly why I spend so much time getting to know my clients before recommending a cruise.

Because the best holiday isn't necessarily the most expensive one.

It's the one that's the perfect fit for you.
