Safari South Africa Experience Eastern Cape

Shamwari Safari - My experience in this Eastern Cape Game Reserve

A South African, Luxury, Safari Experience You Will Never Forget

James Meehan on 02 Sept 2021

If you are dreaming of a safari holiday that combines breathtaking wildlife, five-star comfort and genuine conservation, a stay at Shamwari in South Africa should be at the very top of your list.

A couple of years ago we visited Shamwari, and it still stands out as one of the best holidays we have ever taken. In this guide I will share what the experience is really like so you can decide if a Shamwari or a safari in general is right for you.

Why Choose Shamwari for Your Safari Holiday?

Shamwari is a private game reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, known for its beautiful landscapes, Big Five wildlife and strong focus on conservation. It is also malaria free, which is a major attraction for many travellers planning their first safari or travelling as a couple, group of friends or family.

From the moment we arrived, we understood why Shamwari has such a strong reputation. We were greeted with chilled champagne, personally escorted to our room and immediately made to feel completely looked after. Every detail, from the welcome to the turn-down service, felt polished yet warm and genuine.

The Magic of Your First Game Drive

Our first game drive at Shamwari is something I will never forget.

We arrived, settled into our lodge, enjoyed a leisurely lunch, and then headed out that same evening for our first drive. Nothing felt rushed; instead, it built a wonderful sense of anticipation.

As a lifelong animal and nature documentary lover, finally seeing these animals in real life was incredibly emotional. On that very first evening drive we saw:

  • Lions
  • Giraffe
  • Hippos

Not on a screen, not in a zoo, but in their natural environment, close enough to really feel their presence. It genuinely took my breath away and remains one of the most powerful travel experiences of my life.

If you are asking yourself, “Is a safari at Shamwari worth it?”, the answer from my own experience is a resounding yes.

What Is a Typical Day on Safari at Shamwari Like?

One of the most common questions about safari holidays is what the daily routine looks like. At Shamwari, the safari schedule is beautifully structured and surprisingly relaxing, despite the early starts.

A typical day at Shamwari looks like this:

Early Morning Wake-Up

You rise very early, just before dawn, when wildlife is at its most active. Any worries about early mornings are soothed by:

  • Tea, coffee and light snacks ready for you before you head out
  • The excitement of heading into the bush as the sun comes up

Morning Game Drive

Your morning game drive offers:

  • Cool temperatures and soft light for photography
  • Excellent chances to spot big cats, elephants, rhino and other wildlife

Halfway through, there is a stop for coffee or tea with a view. Every stop felt magical, whether it was mist over the valley or a golden sunrise over the plains.

Breakfast & Midday Downtime

After the drive you return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, followed by:

  • A few peaceful hours to relax
  • Time to enjoy the pool, your private deck or plunge pool
  • A chance to nap, read or simply soak in the surroundings

Lunch follows, and again the standard of food is very high, with lots of variety.

Evening Game Drive & Dinner

  • In the late afternoon you head out again for an evening game drive, staying out until after sunset. This is a beautiful time of day, with changing colours and a different mix of wildlife activity.
  • Back at the lodge, you sit down to dinner under the stars or in the lodge restaurant, depending on the night and weather. Throughout our stay, the food was consistently excellent and they handled all dietary needs and preferences with care.

Staying in a Tented Lodge at Shamwari: Luxury Under Canvas

If you are curious about tented safari accommodation and wondering whether it is too rustic, let me reassure you: our tented lodge at Shamwari was pure luxury.

Before arriving, I was slightly nervous at the idea of staying in a “tent”. Once there, I realised these are far closer to luxury hotel suites than anything you might picture from traditional camping.

    Our tented lodge offered:

    • A spacious, beautifully designed bedroom and bathroom
    • High-quality furnishings and luxury amenities
    • Canvas walls that allowed the sounds of nature to filter through

Is a Shamwari Safari Holiday Right for You?

Choose a Shamwari safari if you are looking for:

    • A malaria-free safari destination in South Africa’s Eastern Cape
    • Luxury lodges and tented camps with exceptional comfort
    • Emotional, once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters
    • A structured but relaxing daily rhythm of game drives, good food and downtime
    • Insightful guiding and a genuine focus on conservation

For us, Shamwari remains one of the most magical trips we have ever taken. It is the kind of holiday that stays with you: the lion sightings, the quiet coffee stops in the bush, the sound of the wind against the canvas walls, and the feeling of being deeply connected to nature while wrapped in complete comfort.
