Bahamas Holiday from Ireland
A relaxed Caribbean resort holiday from Dublin
If you are based in Ireland and have ever thought “The Bahamas looks amazing, but it must be a nightmare to get to”, let me stop you right there. This trip was so much easier than I expected, and the reward at the other end was pure Caribbean bliss.
Getting there: Dublin to Miami via London, overnight in Miami and short hop to Nassau
There are no direct flights from Dublin to The Bahamas, so we routed via London and Miami. It worked perfectly:
- Easy flight from Dublin to Miami with a stop in Heathrow
- Late arrival in Miami, straight to bed
- Woke up with zero jet lag and ready to start the holiday
From Miami the next morning, it is just a short hop to Nassau. The flight is about 30 minutes, there are multiple services a day, and the whole experience felt quick and stress free. Before we knew it, we were touching down in The Bahamas.
Outside the arrivals gate in Nassau, our transfer was already waiting. No queues, no stress. We were whisked straight to our home for the next few nights: Baha Mar.
First impressions of Baha Mar
Baha Mar is not just a hotel, it is a full resort complex with three hotels on one site:
- Grand Hyatt
- SLS
- Rosewood
They cater for different budget levels and styles, but all share the same incredible facilities.
My first reaction: this place is huge. With over 2,500 bedrooms, I was prepared for crowds and queues. Instead, the biggest surprise was how relaxed it felt.
Despite the size:
- It never felt busy or overwhelming
- There were always sun loungers available at every pool and on the beach
- The atmosphere was lively but never chaotic
You get the scale and choice of a big resort, but with the ease and calm of a much smaller property.

Pools, beach and that “you don’t have to think” feeling
We stayed 4 nights and were still discovering new pools and restaurants on the last day. That gives you a sense of just how much there is to explore
What really stood out was the level of service across the whole resort. There are staff everywhere, ready to help with:
- Setting up pool chairs and umbrellas
- Towels
- Food and drink orders
We never had to hover awkwardly or wonder who to ask. Everything was taken care of, which let us properly switch off.
One of the absolute highlights was the food. Across our entire stay, we did not have a single bad meal.
There are countless restaurants and bars, from relaxed poolside bites to more refined evening dining. Because the choice is so wide, a bit of planning is worth it:
- We booked our dinner reservations in advance
- I would definitely recommend this if you prefer specific times or popular restaurants
- Guests without reservations often seemed to face a wait
If your holiday revolves around great food and trying new spots, Baha Mar is a brilliant choice.
Waterpark: perfect for families (and big kids)
Another huge plus is the on-site waterpark, which is free for all guests staying at the resort’s hotels. This makes it incredibly easy to use:
- You can pop in for a couple of hours and wander back out when you are done
- Ideal for families with kids of any age
- Also great if you like slides and lazy rivers but do not want to spend a full day in a separate park
Having this included, rather than as an extra day trip, adds a lot of value to a short stay.
A day in Nassau
We did take a day trip into Nassau itself. It was busier than we expected, mainly because several cruise ships were docked that day, but it was still a great change of scene.
Highlights included:
- Plenty of shopping opportunities
- The famous Straw Market, which is a must-visit for local crafts and souvenirs
We also visited John Watling’s Distillery, where we joined a mixology class. This was such a fun way to spend a couple of hours, learning about local rum and cocktail making while also dipping into the cultural and historic side of The Bahamas.
The marine life right off the beach was incredible. On several occasions, we saw:
- Turtles
- Stingrays
- Larger fish
all swimming right by the shore. We could literally step into the water from the beach and find ourselves alongside these beautiful creatures. It felt very special and is something I will always remember about this trip.
Final thoughts
For a relatively short break from Dublin, this trip felt like a real escape. If you are dreaming of white sand, clear water and a resort where you genuinely do not have to think about a thing, Baha Mar in The Bahamas is a fantastic option to consider.
