Mediterranean Escape on MSC World Europa
Step on board MSC World Europa and let the Mediterranean do the rest. For seven unforgettable nights you will wake to a new horizon, from the sun-drenched harbours of Marseille and Genoa to the dramatic coastlines of Naples and Messina, before gliding into the golden-stone beauty of Valletta. With lazy sea days, evenings spent lingering over steak in Butcher’s Cut or sharing plates in Hola!, and the thrill of knowing you might just uncover the ship’s hidden speakeasy, this roundtrip from Barcelona is the perfect blend of discovery, indulgence and effortless escape for families, couples or groups.
Close your eyes for a moment and picture this: you unpack once, hang up your favourite outfits, and for the next seven nights you simply wake up, draw back the curtains and discover a new Mediterranean view. No rushing for trains, no checking in and out of hotels, just you, the sea and some of the most beautiful ports in Europe.
That is what a week on MSC World Europa, roundtrip from Barcelona, feels like. There is that “holiday goosebumps” moment when you first see the ship in port, step on board and feel everyday life just fall away.
Once you have found your cabin, my favourite way to begin is to head out on deck for sail away. Drink in hand, Barcelona slowly slips away, the sun sinks into the sea and you get that thrilling feeling of “this is it, my holiday has really started”.
Your first call is Marseille, where you really feel that you are in the south of France: old fishing boats in the Vieux-Port, pavement cafés and the scent of fresh seafood. You can head up to Notre-Dame de la Garde for sweeping views or wander deeper into Provence for villages, markets and long, lazy lunches. Then you simply stroll back on board, knowing dinner, entertainment and your bed are all taken care of.
Next you wake up in Italy, in Genoa, with its historic streets and grand old palaces, and perhaps take the chance to visit Portofino: pastel houses, turquoise water and harbourside terraces that feel like they belong on a postcard. Then comes vibrant Naples, where you might wander the chaotic streets and eat the best pizza of your life, explore ancient Pompeii, or slip along the coast to Sorrento. In Sicily, arriving in Messina, a visit to Taormina is a highlight: cobbled lanes, boutiques and that incredible view from the ancient theatre towards Mount Etna. Sailing into Valletta is another “pinch me” moment, with Malta’s golden stone walls rising from the sea and tiny streets perfect for a gentle wander and a coffee in the sun.
Sea days on MSC World Europa are all about slowing down. Morning coffee on your balcony, time by the pool with a book you finally have time to read, perhaps an hour or two in the spa. In the evenings you can wander from bar to bar, pause for live music or a show, and then decide where to eat. I loved trying the speciality restaurants: Hola! for relaxed, vibrant Latin flavours and sharing plates, and Butcher’s Cut for a proper treat-night steak in a cosy, clubby setting. And if you are lucky, you might even stumble upon the hidden speakeasy bar on board, a little secret corner where it feels as though the rest of the world is very far away. It is lovely to know you can dress up a little, enjoy a really good meal, end the night with a perfectly mixed cocktail and then be just a short stroll from your cabin.
For me, this itinerary works beautifully because it gives you four countries in one effortless week: Spain, France, Italy and Malta, without the hassle. You get big sights and simple pleasures, busy days ashore and quiet moments at sea, and you always come back “home” to the same comfortable cabin. You step off MSC World Europa feeling rested, inspired and already debating which port, or which evening on board, was your favourite.
