When most travellers think of the Canadian Rockies, they envision the iconic sites like Banff and Lake Louise. While these destinations are undoubtedly breathtaking, there’s so much more to discover in this rugged region, especially if you take the road less travelled. On a circular journey starting and ending in Calgary, I explored some of the Rockies’ hidden gems, from serene mountain towns to vineyards near the US border. Here's a peek into the adventure:

Starting Point: Calgary

Your adventure begins in Calgary, the gateway to the Rockies. After taking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, it's time to hit the road and head west toward your first destination.

Banff: Majestic Peaks and Alpine Beauty

Banff is the crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for good reason. Nestled amidst towering peaks, this charming mountain town offers a mix of outdoor adventure and luxury. Whether you're soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, taking a gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views, or exploring the local boutiques and restaurants, Banff is a must-visit. One of our highlights here was a horse-riding trip but there's tonnes of activities to choose from.

Canmore: Caving and Adventure

A short drive from Banff, Canmore offers a more laid-back vibe while still delivering on adventure. One of the highlights here is caving in Rat's Nest Cave. This underground journey takes you deep into the heart of the Rockies, where you'll scramble, climb, and squeeze your way through a labyrinth of caverns. It's an exhilarating experience that reveals a side of the Rockies many never see.

Lake Louise: A Picture-Perfect Paradise

Lake Louise is one of the most photographed lakes in the world, and it's easy to see why. The turquoise waters, framed by towering peaks and the Victoria Glacier, create a scene straight out of a postcard. While many visit for the views, consider taking a hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House or the Plain of Six Glaciers for a more immersive experience. If you're visiting in the winter, the frozen lake transforms into a magical ice-skating rink.

Osoyoos: Wine Country with a View

Venturing south toward the US border, you'll find Osoyoos, a hidden gem in British Columbia's wine country. Known for its warm, desert-like climate, Osoyoos boasts some of Canada’s best vineyards. Spend an afternoon wine tasting while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains and Osoyoos Lake. This unexpected stop adds a touch of luxury to your Rockies Road trip.

Nelson: The Artistic Heart of the Kootenays

Nelson is a vibrant town known for its artsy vibe and outdoor lifestyle. Surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains, Nelson offers a mix of culture and adventure. Stroll through the town's historic streets, explore local galleries, or take a kayak out on Kootenay Lake. The town's unique blend of creativity and nature makes it a perfect stop on your journey.

Kootenay National Park: Hiking in Untouched Wilderness

The final highlight of your journey is Kootenay National Park, a less-visited but equally stunning counterpart to Banff. The park offers a variety of hiking trails that lead you through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to alpine meadows. Don’t miss the Marble Canyon, where a short hike takes you along a deep, dramatic gorge carved by the rushing waters of Tokumm Creek. It's a peaceful way to wrap up your road trip before heading back to Calgary.
