Family Summer Holiday in Germany: City Adventures, Playmobil FunPark & Lake Luxury

Tracy O'Donoghue on 01 Aug 2021

In the summer of 2019, we chose Germany as our family holiday destination – I still consider it to be one of the very best holidays we did with the kids, and I continue to talk about it to this day!

Munich

We flew directly from Dublin to Munich and based ourselves centrally, perfectly placed for exploring the main sights. We watched the Glockenspiel chime in Marienplatz, visited the Deutsches Museum (one of the world’s largest science and technology museums, with an impressively interactive children’s area), and spent a day at Munich Zoo. Germany is so child-friendly - the kids enjoyed the food and the beer gardens often had dedicated playgrounds, making some easy and enjoyable meals for all!

Next, we hopped on one of Germany’s efficient trains to Nuremberg, a city of history with lots of charm. We wandered the cobbled streets, browsed traditional toy shops, and used Nuremberg as our base for what I consider to be one of Germany’s best-kept secrets: Playmobil FunPark!

If you have children (particularly under the age of 10), I would highly recommend adding this to your family holiday list. We spent two days in the park and could have stretched it to three, as it was so much fun. There are themed play zones (Pirates, Castles & Knights, Fairies & Mermaids etc.), indoor and outdoor playgrounds, splash parks, climbing areas, and a whole lot more.

Tegernsee

After our fun with Playmobil, we hired a car and drove about two and a half hours south to the Bavarian Alps, arriving at beautiful Lake Tegernsee. We stayed at the Bachmair Weissach Resort & Spa - a beautiful hotel with several restaurants, an outdoor pool, family suites, a family-friendly spa, and fantastic kids’ and teens’ clubs. You can walk along the lake, borrow bicycles and more. It was a great way to unwind after an otherwise busy trip. And with Munich airport just over an hour’s drive away, it made for a smooth and easy journey home - ideal when travelling with kids.

Would I Recommend Germany for a Family Holiday?

Absolutely, 100%! If you haven’t considered Germany with kids, it’s a destination that ticks every box - direct flights, transportation is efficient, it's safe, there are lots of child-friendly attractions and food, rich history, culture, beautiful natural settings and more. And while you may experience some hot days while traveling in summer, overall the weather isn't as hot as other places in Europe, making it a good choice for the whole family.
