Tuscany & the Tyrrhenian Coast: Pisa, Lucca and Viareggio
11 nights from €2,950 per person
Highlights
- Join a guided tour of Pisa's Cathedral Square, taking in the Leaning Tower up close alongside the baptistery and the cathedral that frame it
- Walk the medieval walls of Lucca, one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Italy, with the full circuit sitting about 4km above the rooftops
- Join a three-hour food tour through Lucca's streets and markets, tasting local Tuscan produce with a guide and a small group of no more than twelve people
- Spend six nights in Viareggio on the Tyrrhenian coast, a traditional Italian seaside town with a wide sandy beach, a long seafront promenade and the Apuan Alps visible from the shore
Pisa
Most people see Pisa in a couple of hours on a day trip and move on. Two nights here changes that. The Cathedral Square, known as the Piazza dei Miracoli, is where you spend your guided tour on the first morning, covering the Leaning Tower, the cathedral and the baptistery at a proper pace rather than a sprint. Beyond the square, the old town along the north bank of the Arno is quiet, walkable and easy to explore on foot.
Lucca Lucca sits about 20 minutes east of Pisa by car and feels like a very different place. The city is enclosed by wide Renaissance walls that were never knocked down, and the old town inside them has stayed largely unchanged for centuries. The streets inside are narrow, largely traffic-free and lined with independent shops, churches and small squares that reward a slow afternoon on foot. Three nights bed and breakfast in a four-star property in the heart of the city.
Viareggio The final six nights are on the coast at Viareggio, a proper Italian seaside town that has been a summer destination for Italians for well over a century. The beach runs along a long flat stretch of the Tyrrhenian coastline, the seafront is lined with restaurants and beach clubs, and the Apuan Alps form a backdrop behind the town. Six nights bed and breakfast in a seafront hotel, with sea view rooms looking directly out over the beach.
