The Grand Canadian: Rockies, Montreal & Niagara Falls

20 nights from €13,325 per person

This is Canada done properly. Three weeks taking in the best of the west coast, the Canadian Rockies and French-speaking Montreal, with the Rocky Mountaineer train as the centrepiece. It starts in Vancouver with day trips into the mountains, moves through Kamloops, Jasper and Banff by rail, then heads east to Montreal and Toronto before flying home from Niagara Falls country.
Highlights
  • Fly Dublin to Vancouver in Business Class with British Airways and return from Toronto with Aer Lingus, with five nights on Canada's Pacific coast including a day trip north to Whistler village on the Sea to Sky Highway and a guided tour to Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge above an old growth forest
  • Board the Rocky Mountaineer in Gold Leaf Class for two days through British Columbia and into the Canadian Rockies, travelling from Vancouver through Kamloops and on to Jasper with the mountain landscape unfolding through a glass-domed ceiling
  • Two nights in Jasper National Park with a guided Wildlife Discovery Tour seeking out elk, bear and bighorn sheep, followed by a full day drive along the Icefields Parkway to Banff, one of the most scenic mountain roads in the world, with a walk on the Athabasca Glacier and the Columbia Icefield Skywalk included
  • Three nights in the mountain town of Banff in the Canadian Rockies, with an early morning small group tour to the glacial waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake before the day visitors arrive, and a picnic lunch included
  • Fly from Calgary to Montreal for three nights in Canada's French-speaking cultural capital, with a guided walk through the cobbled streets and squares of Old Montreal included, before taking the train to Toronto for five nights on the shores of Lake Ontario, with a full day trip to Niagara Falls including the Hornblower boat ride to the base of the falls

The Rocky Mountaineer

-The Rocky Mountaineer is one of the great train journeys of the world. It runs during daylight hours only, on a two-day route from Vancouver through the heart of British Columbia and into the Canadian Rockies, so you see every kilometre of it.

-In Gold Leaf Class, you travel in a bi-level glass-domed coach with panoramic windows that stretch across the ceiling and down the sides. Seats are wide and forward-facing, positioned so the landscape is always in front of you rather than passing beside you. As the train climbs from the Pacific coast into the mountains, the scenery shifts from river valleys and canyon walls to snowcapped peaks and glacial rivers. It is the kind of journey where you find yourself putting the book down and just watching.

-Breakfast and lunch are served at your seat both days by a dedicated on-board host, along with drinks throughout. There is no dining car to walk to and no queue to join. Everything comes to you as the Canadian Rockies roll past the window.
