Peru
The journey starts in Lima, where the private local tour gives you a first feel for Peru through its neighbourhoods, food, plazas and coastal city life. From there, the route moves into the Sacred Valley, where market towns, Inca ruins and mountain views start to build towards Machu Picchu. It gives the Peru section proper shape, with two nights in the valley before the train journey into the mountains.
Machu Picchu and Cusco
Machu Picchu is the moment many people will book this trip for, and the itinerary gives it the right build-up. You travel by train to Aguas Calientes, stay overnight, then visit the ancient site on a private half-day tour rather than trying to squeeze it into a rushed day. After that, three nights in Cusco give you time for its plazas, stone streets, Inca history and surrounding ruins, with the Andes still all around you.
Chile
Chile brings a different side of South America into the trip. Valparaiso gives you steep hillside streets, colourful buildings, Pacific views and a creative coastal feel, with a private tour through the city’s best-known areas. Further south, Puerto Varas and Frutillar bring lakeside scenery, German-influenced architecture and views towards the volcano landscapes of Chile’s Lake District.
Argentina’s Lake District and Patagonia
The lake crossing to Bariloche is one of the most scenic travel days of the itinerary, moving through water, forest and mountain scenery before reaching Argentina. Bariloche adds alpine-style streets, deep blue lakes and viewpoints along Circuito Chico. Then El Calafate brings the trip into Patagonia properly, with Perito Moreno Glacier and its navigation trip giving you ice, water and mountain scenery in one of Argentina’s most dramatic natural settings.
Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires gives the journey a strong final chapter after the lakes, glaciers and mountain scenery. Spend the last three nights in Argentina’s capital, with time for neighbourhoods such as Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo and La Boca, followed by dinner and tango for a proper Buenos Aires finish. It brings the trip back to city life with food, music, colour and one final hit of South American energy before flying home.
