South Africa's Garden Route

14 nights from €3,600 per person

This fourteen night fly drive follows one of the world's great coastal routes, from Cape Town through the Winelands and Klein Karoo to the beaches of Plettenberg Bay and a final three nights on a private game reserve at Sibuya. Flying from Dublin with Qatar Airways via Doha, with 14 days car hire included from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, the route gives you the freedom to move at your own pace through some of South Africa's most varied and rewarding scenery.

Four nights at The Onyx Apartment Hotel in Cape Town start the trip in one of the most dramatically situated cities on earth, with Table Mountain rising above the city and the Atlantic coastline stretching south. A hop-on hop-off city sightseeing tour on the first full day covers the main landmarks and gives you a good feel for the layout before you spend the remaining days exploring at your own pace.

The drive east takes you first into the Franschhoek Valley, one of South Africa's most celebrated wine regions, set among mountain peaks and vine covered hillsides. Two nights at Maison Chablis on a bed and breakfast basis gives you time to explore the town, visit a few estates and settle into the slower pace of the Winelands before continuing inland.

A single night at Hlangana Lodge in Oudtshoorn places you in the heart of the Klein Karoo, a dry semi-desert region best known as home to the world's largest ostrich population. The area is also the gateway to the Cango Caves, one of the largest cave systems in Africa, with dramatic limestone formations extending deep into the mountain.

Three nights at Starfish Guest Lodge in Plettenberg Bay marks a return to the coast. Plettenberg Bay is one of the Garden Route's most popular stops, with long sandy beaches, calm lagoons and easy access to Robberg Nature Reserve, where a circular trail along a rocky peninsula rewards with views over the bay and the chance to spot seals, dolphins and, in season, whales.

The trip ends at Sibuya Game Reserve, a private reserve outside Kenton-on-Sea reached by boat along the Kariega River. Three nights at River Camp on a full board basis gives you game drives in a malaria-free reserve where elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard all roam. It is a strong finish to the route, trading the open road for bush walks and early morning drives before the flight home from Port Elizabeth.
