Prague
Prague is one of the most intact medieval cities in Europe, largely undamaged by the Second World War and compact enough to cover on foot. The old town sits on the west bank of the Vltava River, with the castle district visible on the hill above. September is one of the better months to visit, with summer crowds beginning to ease and the city easier to move around.
Vienna
Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg Empire for centuries and the city still carries that weight in its architecture, its museums and its concert halls. The Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard built by Emperor Franz Joseph in the 1860s, circles the historic centre and connects most of the main landmarks. The coffee house culture here is genuinely its own thing, with institutions that have been operating since the 18th century.
Budapest
Budapest is two cities in one, with Buda on the west bank of the Danube and Pest on the east, connected by a series of grand bridges. The castle district above the river and the thermal baths fed by natural hot springs beneath the city are two of the most distinctive things about the place. The city has a strong food and bar scene, particularly in the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter in Pest.
