Polignano a Mare
Polignano a Mare is the kind of place that makes you want to head out without much of an agenda. Wander through the old town in the morning, stop for coffee in a small piazza, then follow the streets towards the terraces overlooking the sea. Lama Monachile sits between the cliffs below the town, while the promenade is made for an evening walk before dinner.
Puglia through its food
Food is one of the best reasons to come to this part of Italy. In Bari, you will learn to shape orecchiette by hand and make the tomato-topped focaccia the city is known for, then sit down to enjoy both with local wine. Away from the class, look out for burrata, fresh seafood, panzerotti and simple pasta dishes built around Puglia’s olive oil and seasonal produce.
Bari and the coast
Bari is worth more than a quick visit. Cycle through the narrow lanes of the old town, where pasta is still made by hand outside family homes, then continue past the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the castle, lively squares and the seafront. Back in Polignano, get out on the Adriatic for a completely different view of the coastline, where caves open beneath the cliffs and clear coves give you the chance to stop for a swim.
