Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, built across a narrow isthmus with a harbour on either side and volcanic peaks visible from the centre. The waterfront is worth spending time on, the food scene is well established and the city has enough variety to fill four nights comfortably. It is also a practical base, with the Hobbiton film set in Matamata and the wider Waikato countryside easily reached by car.
Rotorua
Rotorua sits on the southern shore of a large volcanic lake in the centre of the North Island. The town is geothermally active, with steam venting from the ground and boiling mud pools visible throughout the surrounding area. It is also the cultural heartland of the Maori people, with a history and tradition that gives the stop real weight beyond the volcanic landscape. The guided tour to the Mount Tarawera crater, the volcano that erupted in 1886 and reshaped the region permanently, is one of the standout experiences of the whole trip.
Fiji
The Outrigger Beach Resort sits directly on a white sand beach on the Coral Coast, the quieter stretch of Fiji's main island away from the busier resort areas further north. The water is clear, the reef is accessible from the shore and the resort has everything you need on site. After two weeks of touring New Zealand, it is exactly the right place to finish.
