South Beach to the Florida Keys
The trip opens with one night in South Beach, giving you a first taste of Miami before the road turns south. From here, the route changes quickly as you leave the city behind and join the Overseas Highway, the road that links the Florida Keys by a chain of bridges over shallow blue water. Marathon is the first proper island stay, with beaches, marinas and a useful position between the Upper Keys and Key West.
Key West and Islamorada
Three nights in Key West bring the road trip to its most atmospheric point. Walk the old town’s streets, visit the harbourfront, watch the sunset gather around Mallory Square or look up the Hemingway Home, where the island’s literary history sits behind shaded gardens and wraparound balconies. The return towards Miami breaks in Islamorada, where seafood restaurants, fishing heritage and calm water views give the Keys a softer final stretch.
From road trip to Caribbean cruise
After eight days with the car, the journey changes from island road trip to seven nights at sea. Puerto Plata gives the cruise its first Caribbean call, with beaches and the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe close to the port area. San Juan brings a longer day ashore, so there is time to explore Old San Juan’s pastel streets, walk towards El Morro and stay into the evening before sailing on to The Bahamas.
MSC World America
MSC World America brings a large, resort-style cruise setting after the Florida Keys, with a Balcony cabin giving you private outdoor space for the sea days between Miami, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and The Bahamas. The ship is arranged into seven districts, so you can move between the Aqua Deck for pools and whirlpools, the adults-only Zen Area, the World Galleria for bars, shops and entertainment, and Family Aventura, which includes the Aquapark and children’s facilities. Dining includes 19 venues, with Eataly, Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse, Kaito Sushi and Hola! Tacos & Cantina among the speciality options, while evenings can include live music, the World Theatre, Luna Park Arena shows, lounges and time outdoors on deck. Sea days can be as active or as relaxed as you want, from the Aquapark and pool areas to the MSC Aurea Spa, gym and quieter corners of the ship.
