Budva
Budva is Montenegro's main resort town, sitting on a small peninsula on the Adriatic coast. The Old Town is enclosed by medieval walls and is easy to walk around in an hour or two, taking in the narrow lanes, the sea views from the ramparts and the waterfront bars along the way. Outside the walls, the main beach runs along the bay and the water is clean, calm and very swimmable. The town comes alive in the evenings, with plenty of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of the hotel.
The Surrounding Coast
The stretch of coastline around Budva gives you plenty to explore if you want to get out of town for a day. Sveti Stefan, a tiny fortified island village connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, is one of the most photographed spots in the whole Balkans and is about fifteen minutes by car. The town of Kotor, a UNESCO-listed walled city set at the end of a deep bay that looks more like a Norwegian fjord than the Adriatic, is around forty minutes away and well worth a visit.
Getting Out and About
Montenegro is a small country, which means a lot is accessible from Budva in a day. Cetinje, the old royal capital, sits up in the mountains behind the coast. Lovćen National Park offers mountain roads and sweeping views back down to the sea. For families who want to mix beach time with a bit of exploration, Budva is a solid base.
