Skagen sits at the very tip of Denmark where the North Sea and the Baltic meet at a strip of sand. You can walk out and stand between two seas. The town has a long history of artists drawn by the quality of the light, and a sand-buried church that stays with you.

  • Stockholm is built across fourteen islands and is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. Gamla Stan's medieval streets are largely intact, and the Vasa Museum houses a 17th century warship raised from the seabed almost perfectly preserved. Tallinn's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobbled streets, a hilltop fortress and views from Toompea Hill over the rooftops that alone are worth the stop.
  • Helsinki is quieter than the other ports and all the better for it. Senate Square is one of the grandest open spaces in northern Europe, and the Temppeliaukio Church, carved directly into a granite rock face, is unlike anything else on this route. Two days in Copenhagen gives you time to do the city properly, from Nyhavn's coloured canal houses to Tivoli Gardens, Christiansborg Palace and a free second day to explore at your own pace.
