Serengeti Safari - Tanzania

There are once in a life time adventures and my trip to the Serengeti was that for sure. We flew with Qatar Airways via Doha to Kilimanjaro who were just top class. A quick stop in Arusha for one night to break up the journey and then the 'real' adventure began. Arusha is a very small rural airport that serves the Serengeti area, and this is where we boarded our light aircraft for an exciting short flight to the Grumeti Airstrip deep in the Serengeti. From there we went straight by jeep to the extremely unique and amazing Bush Rover Suites.

The Bush Rover Suites are full working Land Rovers that once in situ turn into a stunning home, deep in the heart of the great Wildebeest migration. There is a beautiful elevated bedroom with your own balcony (complete with sofa for watching the sun go down), and downstairs is a wood panelled bathroom (complete with a romantic bath) and an outdoor shower which is solar powered to ensure hot water, lights and power. Sure, what more could you want. Fabulous dining is guaranteed from the lovely mess tent with beautiful sofa’s and stunning views of the vast plains ahead. It was a truly special experience - my only regret is that we couldn't stay for longer!

The annual migration is a natural phenomenon which takes place each year where 1.5 million Wildebeest move onwards for better grazing. The sheer numbers of Wildebeest, Zebra, Elephant, Buffalo, Baboons, Impala, Hippos & Giraffe we encountered on our daily game drives was simply unbelievable. We actually witnessed the start of the Wildebeest begin their migration on our second night! The excitement in camp even amongst the rangers and staff was almost tangible.

There were many memorable moments but for me one of them had to be the flying over the Serengeti and realising I was so far removed from technology. This was what being at one with nature really meant. The say the Holy Grail of safari is the Serengeti and now I know why. Stunning skylines, dining under a sky full of stars with the log fire burning away, with just the sounds of the animals & birds in the background- all day & all night. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

Tanzania is so unique as a destination combining stunning beaches in Zanzibar, wildlife beyond your imagination in the Serengeti, Selous and Ngorongoro Crater & wonderful birding near Lake Victoria – it is a total holiday in one country.
