Planning an Oman Holiday or Honeymoon
Oh Oman. Arabian nights, Arabian dreams, and one of the coolest places I’ve experienced! We visited as a side trip from Dubai, but Oman is absolutely a destination in its own right, with a completely different vibe. More traditional, and much more about landscapes and culture but with some stunning hotels, too. If you’re thinking about an Oman holiday or honeymoon, let's go!
Why Choose Oman?
Oman feels very different to its neighbours. You’ve got:
- dramatic mountain landscapes desert
- coastline and hidden wadis
- traditional towns and forts
- a slower, more authentic feel
It’s not about skyscrapers and shopping, it’s about scenery, space and a different pace.
Oman is all about contrast. One minute you’re driving through rugged mountains, the next you’re by the sea or in the middle of the desert.
From winding roads through the Hajar Mountains to quiet beaches along the Arabian Sea, desert landscapes and Bedouin-style experiences to small towns and local markets - it's a place that feels a bit more off the radar.
Six Senses Zighy Bay
We chose to stay at Six Senses Zighy Bay, and it was one of my favourite hotel experiences ever. The journey alone sets the tone. We were picked up in a 4x4 in Dubai and driven through the Hajar Mountains, crossing from the UAE into Oman.
After about two hours, the road climbs steeply up into the mountains before revealing the most incredible view down over the bay. From there, you can paraglide into the resort (or arrive by speedboat), either way, it felt very James Bond!
The resort itself is designed in the style of a traditional Omani village: private villas with pools and sand gardens local materials and understated luxury camels and mountain goats wandering nearby
Some of the highlights:
- swimming in the warm Arabian Sea
- incredible food, especially at Spice Market
- sunset drinks at Zighy Bar
- dining at Senses on the Edge high up in the mountains
- the Bedouin-style dining experience
The spa is exactly what you’d expect from Six Senses, using local ingredients like dates, honey, rosewater and sea salt.
It’s secluded, special, and perfect for a honeymoon or a big occasion.
Beyond Zighy Bay
While Zighy Bay is a destination in itself, there’s a lot more to Oman.
Muscat - The capital is a great place to start or finish. The Grand Mosque and traditional souks are incredible
Mountains and Wadis - Explore Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams for cooler temperatures and dramatic views
Wadis - (natural pools) like Wadi Shab for swimming and exploring
The Desert - Wahiba Sands for dune landscapes and desert camps sunset drives and Bedouin-style experiences
The Coast - long, quiet beaches and islands
Where to Combine with Oman
Oman works really well on its own, but can also be part of a wider trip. Some popular options:
- combining with a stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi
- pairing with a Maldives honeymoon or another Indian Ocean beach stay
Planning Your Oman Trip
Oman is easy to reach, especially from Dubai, but planning the route properly makes a big difference. Things to think about:
- whether to base yourself in one place or move around
- adding mountains or desert to your itinerary
- choosing the right style of hotel
and I can help create the perfect itinerary!
