Planning a Mexico Honeymoon or Holiday
Because sometimes in life, only a 5* adults-only all-inclusive will do! Mexico is one of my most requested honeymoon destinations, especially for couples looking for beautiful beaches, great food and a really easy, relaxing trip. I was lucky enough to spend a week at one of the gorgeous Secrets Resorts on the Riviera Maya, and it completely lived up to expectations. If you’re thinking about a Mexico honeymoon or holiday, let's go!
Why Choose Mexico?
Mexico is one of those destinations that just works. It’s easy, reliable, affordable and fun! It delivers exactly what people want from a beach honeymoon or holiday.
- Long stretches of white sand and turquoise Caribbean water
- 5* all-inclusive resorts with multiple restaurants
- Swim-up bars, beach service and incredible cocktails
- Warm weather and a really relaxed atmosphere
- A mix of beach time and cultural experiences
For me, one of the biggest draws is the value - all-inclusive resorts in Mexico are among the best in the world.
My Mexico Experience
I stayed on the Riviera Maya, between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and it’s exactly what you want it to be. The beach was stunning, soft sand, clear water and that constant warm Caribbean breeze. Days were spent moving between the beach, the pool and the swim-up bar, with no real plan other than what we felt like doing. Food is a big part of holidays for me, and having multiple à la carte restaurants included made a huge difference.
One of my favourites was a beach BBQ set up by the chef with fresh grilled seafood, with drinks brought straight to our sun loungers. You really don’t have to lift a finger.
The hardest part? Actually leaving the resort! But you 100% should - as tempting as it is to stay put, there is so much to see and do on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Best Things To Do In Mexico (Beyond The Resort)
- Tulum Beautiful beaches, boutique hotels and Mayan ruins overlooking the sea.
- Chichén Itzá One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, with the iconic El Castillo pyramid at its centre.
- Cenotes Natural sinkholes with crystal-clear freshwater, perfect for swimming.
- Valladolid A colourful colonial town that’s well worth a stop if you’re heading inland.
- Isla Holbox or island hopping A more laid-back, bohemian alternative to the main Riviera Maya resorts.
Is Mexico Just For All-Inclusive Resorts?
The Riviera Maya is best known for its all-inclusive resorts, and they are brilliant, especially for couples and families who just want a fun beach resort.
For couples and honeymoons: Adults-only resorts like Secrets are ideal if you want an easy, relaxing trip with great food, drinks and service all taken care of. For something a little different: It’s also possible to mix things up with boutique hotels in places like Tulum or Isla Holbox, or even explore further into Mexico.
For families: Mexico works really well for families, especially in the Riviera Maya where many resorts have excellent kids’ clubs, family suites and loads of activities. It’s an easy, sun-filled option where everything is taken care of, but choosing the right resort is key depending on the ages of your children.
Destinations like Mexico City, Oaxaca or San Miguel de Allende offer a completely different side of the country if you want to add a little more variety.
When To Go To Mexico
The Riviera Maya works best in the winter months.
- November to April is typically the best time to visit, with warm, sunny weather
- May to October is hotter and more humid and due to issues with seaweed in recent years - it's important to pick the right spot.
Where To Combine With Mexico
Mexico works really well as part of a multi-destination honeymoon or holiday.
One of my most popular honeymoon combinations is Mexico with a city like New York, Miami or Toronto, a few nights of sightseeing followed by total relaxation on the beach and many other cities have year round or seasonal direct flights - think Nashville, LA, Vancouver.
A USA or Canada road trip with a beach add in Mexico is a fantastic combination for a honeymoon or holiday of a lifetime.
Exploring more of the Americas If you have more time, you can combine the Riviera Maya with other parts of Mexico like Mexico City, Oaxaca or Baja California for something more varied. Maybe you'd like to explore South America or Central America? Spots like Peru or Costa Rica can easily be tagged on a beach stay in Mexico.
Planning Your Mexico Honeymoon or Holiday
While Mexico is one of the easier long-haul trips to plan, there are still a few key decisions that make a big difference.
Things like:
- choosing the right resort
- deciding on adults-only vs family-friendly
- picking the right area (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or beyond) deciding
- whether to stay put or split your trip
And that's where I come in! I'll help you create an itinerary where everything is taken care of - match you with the right resort and overall trip, whether that’s a straightforward package or something a little more tailor made.
