California Dreaming: A Coastal Road Trip from San Francisco to Las Vegas
San Francisco – Golden Gates and Gourmet Delights I began in San Francisco, the city of sweeping bay views, historic cable cars and the famous Golden Gate bridge. We stayed in a boutique hotel in Nob Hill with panoramic views and easy access to the city’s best spots. Mornings were for pastries in North Beach, afternoons exploring the vibrant Mission District and evenings sipping cocktails in rooftop bars. Highlights included strolling through Golden Gate Park, shopping in Union Square, visiting Alcatraz and cycling across the bridge to Sausalito for lunch and taking the ferry back. The city’s mix of innovation and heritage makes it endlessly captivating.
Monterey & Carmel – Coastal Charms Leaving the city, I headed south on Highway 1, stopping first in Monterey. I loved the relaxed vibe of Cannery Row and spent an hour or so at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The drive along 17-Mile Drive into Carmel was pure magic – misty cliffs, cypress trees and the most beautiful ocean views. Carmel itself was like stepping into a fairytale. I stayed in a charming inn just off Ocean Avenue, perfect for romantic walks on the beach or exploring local galleries and wine tasting rooms.
San Luis Obispo – Small Town, Big Heart Next up was San Luis Obispo, or SLO as the locals affectionately call it. This friendly college town is a fantastic mid-way stop. We enjoyed farm-to-table dining, hiked up Bishop Peak for sweeping views, and discovered Bubblegum Alley – quirky, colourful and surprisingly photogenic. SLO is ideal for a slower pace and offers a lovely blend of nature, culture and laid-back charm.
Santa Barbara – The Riviera of the West Just when I thought it couldn’t get more beautiful, I arrived in Santa Barbara. With its Mediterranean-style architecture, palm-lined beaches and upscale wine bars, this city is all about luxury and relaxation. I spent my time browsing chic boutiques on State Street, visiting the historic Mission and enjoying sunset dinners by the sea. It's also a great base for wine tasting in the nearby Santa Ynez Valley.
Los Angeles – Glitz & Glam From Santa Barbara, I made my way to West Hollywood. This part of LA is vibrant, creative and full of energy. I checked into a stylish hotel on Sunset Boulevard, just steps from designer shops and celebrity haunts. I explored the Hollywood Hills, hiked Runyon Canyon, and indulged in unforgettable meals in Beverly Hills. The Getty offers stunning art and architecture with panoramic city views and a trip to the Farmers Market and adjacent mall The Grove is a perfect afternoon out. A trip down to Venice Beach and Santa Monica was also a must. Both located by the ocean but offering very different experiences.
La Jolla & San Diego – Coastal Sophistication Heading further south, La Jolla offered a peaceful coastal escape. The dramatic cliffs, elegant streets and oceanfront dining made it one of my favourite stops. Kayak through sea caves, watch seals sunbathe on the shore and wander through the charming village centre. A lunch at the famous Georges on the Cove was as memorable as anticipated. San Diego itself was full of surprises – a city that blends relaxed beach life with a lively cultural scene. Explore Balboa Park, the historic Gaslamp Quarter and take a sunset cruise around the bay.
Las Vegas – A Glittering Finale Finally, I headed east through the desert to Las Vegas. After the laid-back pace of the coast, Vegas dazzled with its energy and excess. I stayed in a luxurious hotel overlooking the Strip, enjoyed world-class shows and dined in restaurants run by celebrity chefs. The perfect way to end the journey on a high.
Reflections from the Road This California road trip gave the perfect blend of romance, adventure and luxury. Each destination had its own unique charm, and the journey itself – winding down the coast and into the desert – was just as memorable as the stops along the way. It’s a trip that works just as well for couples as it does for older families or friends looking for an unforgettable escape. With just the right balance of sightseeing, relaxation and indulgence, this route offers the ultimate taste of the West Coast – and leaves you wanting to do it all over again.
