Switzerland by Rail: Zurich, Zermatt and St Moritz

Scenic Rail Journeys

Travel between each stop by first class panoramic trains, where the journey is part of the experience. Sit back as the route moves past lakes, through valleys and up into the mountains, with large windows giving you clear views throughout. Expect winding tracks, small alpine villages, forested slopes and high mountain passes along the way. The section between Zermatt and St Moritz is one of the highlights, crossing bridges and climbing through open scenery that you simply do not see from the road.

Zurich

Begin with two nights in Zurich staying at Central Plaza Hotel overlooking the river. The old town is right on your doorstep, with cobbled streets, cafés and shops along the Limmat. Walk along the lake, explore Bahnhofstrasse or take in the views from Lindenhof Hill. It is an easy city to get around and a good starting point.

Zermatt

Travel by first class train to Zermatt, a mountain village at the base of the Matterhorn. Cars are not allowed here, which adds to the setting. Stay three nights at Wellness Hotel Alpenhof. Spend your time walking through the village, taking the Gornergrat railway for views of the surrounding peaks or heading up by cable car for higher altitude viewpoints. This is one of the most recognisable mountain settings in Europe.

St Moritz

Continue by rail to St Moritz, passing through alpine scenery along the way. Stay three nights at Art Boutique Monopol Hotel. St Moritz sits beside a lake, surrounded by mountains, and is known for its outdoor setting. Walk around the lake, take a mountain railway for views or explore nearby villages and trails.
