Peru in Depth

This fifteen night small group tour is built for travellers who want to see Peru properly. Travelling with Intrepid, with a local leader throughout, the route takes in Lima, Paracas, the Nazca Lines, Arequipa, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, with enough time at each stop to actually take it in.

Peru in Depth

Lima

Lima is Peru's capital and your starting point, a sprawling coastal city with one of the best food scenes in South America. A guided walking tour of the historic centre takes in Plaza Mayor, the San Francisco Monastery and the central market, where vendors sell fresh produce and regional specialities. The Miraflores district, perched above the Pacific cliffs, is where you will spend your first evening with the group.

Paracas and Nazca

From Lima the tour heads south to Paracas, where a boat trip out to Islas Ballestas takes in sea lions, penguins and seabirds on the rocky islands off the coast. From there the route continues to the Nazca Lines, where enormous figures etched into the desert floor have survived since the 2nd century BC. A viewing tower is included, an optional scenic flight is available locally, and the day finishes with a traditional pachamanca dinner in a local home.

Arequipa

Arequipa sits at the foot of El Misti Volcano and is one of Peru's most striking cities. Built from pale volcanic rock called sillar, the old buildings catch the sun in a way that gives the city its nickname, the White City. A guided walking tour covers the main plaza, Santa Catalina Monastery and San Ignacio Chapel, with time afterwards to explore the city independently.

Lake Titicaca and Puno

From Arequipa, travel across the Andean plateau to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. A full day is spent on the lake, visiting the floating Uros Islands and Taquile Island, where traditional textile making is still part of daily life. This section offers a very different side of Peru, shaped by altitude, landscape and local customs.

Cusco

Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas and the heart of the Inca empire. A guided walking tour covers Qoricancha temple, San Pedro market and the main square, and a full Boleto Turistico pass is included, giving access to sixteen archaeological sites across the city and region.

Sacred Valley

A full day in the Sacred Valley takes in Sacsayhuaman fortress, a visit to the Huilloq community where traditional weaving and daily life are shared, and the archaeological site at Ollantaytambo.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is the centrepiece of the tour and one of the most extraordinary sites on earth. Built around 1440 AD as a retreat for the Inca nobility, the ruined city of temples, palaces and living quarters sits high in the Andes above the cloud forest. A guided tour is included. The journey there is part of the experience, travelling by scenic train through the Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes before the early morning bus up to the ruins.
