Christmas Markets Cologne

Enchanting Rhine and Yuletide Markets

On Board MS Geoffrey Chaucer

There is something truly magical about seeing Europe's Christmas Markets by River

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about travelling along the Rhine in early December. The lights are softer, the markets glow with festive charm and every riverside town feels as if it has stepped out of a Christmas story. This year I joined the elegant MS Geoffrey Chaucer for a Christmas market cruise, and it was the perfect start to the season.

Boarding MS Geffrey Chaucer

My journey began with a smooth flight to Düsseldorf, followed by a very comfortable forty five minute coach transfer to the ship in Cologne . The welcome on board was warm and relaxed, and after lunch I was ready to begin exploring. Our first stop was the lively city of Cologne, home to some of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe. The cathedral square shimmered with thousands of tiny lights, and the air was filled with the scent of mulled wine, roasted nuts and gingerbread. Wandering from stall to stall, admiring handcrafted decorations and watching families soaking up the festive atmosphere, set the tone beautifully for the days ahead.

River Cruise

Koblenz, where two rivers meet

The next morning brought us to Koblenz, a soft and gentle contrast to Cologne. Nestled where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, the old town felt calm and welcoming under the winter sky. Its Christmas market has a more intimate feel, with cobbled streets, traditional wooden stalls and a slower rhythm that invites you to take your time. I wandered with a hot chocolate in hand, stopping to browse beautiful handmade crafts and enjoy the simple pleasure of being outdoors in a city that truly embraces the season.

Christmas Markets

Bonn, full of charm and tradition

Our journey continued to Bonn, a city that wears Christmas beautifully. The markets here spread across several squares, each with a slightly different character. Musicians played festive tunes, the scent of cinnamon drifted through the air and stalls were brimming with winter woollens, handcrafted ornaments and tempting pastries. It felt elegant yet cosy, a place where locals and visitors mingle naturally and the festive spirit feels authentic and heartfelt.

Sailing through castle country

Between each stop, the river itself became part of the experience. This stretch of the Rhine is famous for its castles, and December gives them a special kind of magic. Perched high above the river, often wrapped in mist or illuminated by a soft winter glow, they appear one after another like scenes from a fairy tale. Burg Katz, Marksburg and Rheinfels are just a few of the many that line the hills along the way. Guests gathered on deck and in the lounge to watch the landscape pass by, pointing out each castle and vineyard as it came into view. These peaceful hours on the water were some of my favourite moments, offering a quiet balance to the lively markets.

Life on board MS Geoffrey Chaucer

MS Geoffrey Chaucer was a wonderful base for this festive journey. The ship is stylish yet welcoming, with spacious lounges, cosy corners and plenty of room to relax. My cabin was modern, comfortable and featured a French balcony that allowed me to enjoy river views even while getting ready in the morning. Meals on board were excellent, with a lovely mix of classic dishes and regional flavours, all served by a friendly and attentive crew who made the atmosphere feel warm and personal.

After exploring a busy market, returning to the ship felt like stepping into a floating boutique hotel. Soft lighting, gentle music and that familiar buzz of guests sharing stories from the day created a lovely sense of community. It is one of the reasons river cruising is such a pleasure in winter. You have all the comforts you want, without ever losing that feeling of being connected to the places you visit.

It’s also worth saying that river cruising is a completely different experience to ocean cruising. They are two very distinct styles of travel, each with their own appeal, and one is not a substitute for the other. River cruises are all about slower days, smaller ships, intimate surroundings and sailing right through the heart of towns and cities. Ocean cruising, on the other hand, offers far more choice in dining, entertainment and onboard facilities. Having first hand experience of both, I know exactly who will fall in love with river cruising and who might find it a little too quiet. That’s where my role really comes in. Managing expectations is key, and matching the right cruise style to the right traveller makes all the difference to enjoying the experience.
