Malta: sun, history & a little bit of everything
Small enough to explore easily, yet varied enough to keep couples, friends and families happily occupied for a week or more with its lively nightlife and chic seafront promenades to quiet coves and ancient streets, Malta offers distinct areas that suit different styles of traveller
I’ve just come back from Malta and I’m still thinking about it, the honey-coloured buildings, that incredible blue water, and just how easy it is as a destination. It’s one of those places that really surprises people.
It might be small, but there’s so much variety, and where you stay really does make a difference to the kind of holiday you’ll have. The good news is it’s easy to get around, so you can see a lot even in a week.
Where to stay - it really shapes your trip
St Julian’s – lively and sociable
If you want a bit of buzz, this is the spot. Think bars, restaurants, beach
clubs and a fun atmosphere, especially around Paceville. It’s ideal for couples
or friends who like everything on their doorstep.
During the day it’s much more laid-back than you might expect – seaside cafés, swimming spots and plenty of options for boat trips and water sports.
St Paul’s Bay – easy-going and great for families
This area has a much more relaxed feel and works really well for families.
Plenty of restaurants, a lovely waterfront and lots of accommodation options.
It’s also a great base for getting out and about – boat trips, beaches and exploring the island without being right in the middle of the nightlife.
Sliema – stylish and well-connected
Sliema is perfect if you like a bit of everything – shopping, nice restaurants
and a beautiful seafront promenade.
It’s also one of the best-located areas for exploring, with ferries over to Valletta and good transport links. Ideal if you want to mix relaxing with a bit of wandering and people-watching.
Valletta – full of character and history
Valletta is stunning. It’s small, full of history and perfect if you like
culture, architecture and a bit of atmosphere.
It’s not a typical “sit by the pool all day” destination, but if you enjoy exploring, little streets, cafés and incredible views, it’s a really special place to stay or visit.
Don’t miss getting out on the water
This was definitely one of the highlights for me- Malta from the water is something else.
- Harbour cruise – a lovely way to see Valletta and the Three Cities from a different angle and learn a bit of the history at the same time.
- Gozo & Blue Lagoon – this is the one everyone talks about, and it lives up to it. The water is that unreal turquoise colour, and Gozo has a much quieter, more rural feel.
Beaches & swimming
Malta is more about rocky coves than long sandy beaches, but that’s part of its charm. The water is incredibly clear; perfect for swimming, snorkelling and cooling off.
There are sandy options too if that’s important, especially for families, but I’d recommend embracing the lidos and coves.
A quick honest note
There is quite a bit of development happening at the moment – new hotels, upgrades and improvements. You will notice some construction in places.
That said, it’s all part of Malta investing in its future, and with the right hotel choice you can absolutely still have an amazing holiday.
If Malta has been on your list (or even if it hasn’t yet!), it’s definitely worth considering – it’s one of those destinations that really works for so many different types of holidays.
As always, happy to chat through the best areas and hotels depending on what you’re looking for.
