New Zealand - A Journey Beyond Expectations

Sarah McCarthy on 02 May 2026

"I've been fortunate to visit many incredible destinations throughout my career, but New Zealand is one that will stay with me for a very long time. The scenery is extraordinary, the people are genuinely welcoming and every day seemed to bring a new highlight. It is a destination I cannot wait to recommend - and hopefully return to myself one day"

New Zealand had long been on my travel wish list, particularly Queenstown and the spectacular scenery of the South Island. What followed was a whirlwind journey across both islands that exceeded every expectation I had.

The adventure began in style with Business Class flights operated by British Airways and Malaysia Airlines. Given the distance involved, comfort is hugely important and both airlines delivered an exceptional experience. From attentive service and excellent dining to comfortable lie-flat seating, the journey felt far less daunting than I had anticipated and reinforced why I often recommend premium cabins for long-haul travel when budgets allow.

Auckland & Waiheke Island – The Perfect Introduction

Our first two days were spent exploring Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and a vibrant gateway to the country. Modern, cosmopolitan and beautifully positioned between two harbours, Auckland offers a wonderful introduction to New Zealand life.

One of the highlights was a day trip to Waiheke Island, just a 40-minute ferry crossing from the city. The island felt like a world away from urban life, combining stunning beaches, rolling vineyards and breathtaking coastal scenery. As a wine lover, visiting some of Waiheke’s renowned vineyards was a particular treat, while olive oil tastings, local honey experiences and an exhilarating eco zip-lining adventure added even more variety to the day.

The island’s relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty make it an easy recommendation for anyone spending time in Auckland.

Rotorua – Māori Culture and Geothermal Wonders

Leaving Auckland behind, we travelled south to Rotorua, stopping en route at the world-famous Hobbiton Movie Set.

Even for those who have never watched The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit films, Hobbiton is an extraordinary experience. The attention to detail is remarkable and it’s easy to understand why it has become New Zealand’s most visited attraction. Walking through the movie set felt like stepping into another world entirely.

Rotorua itself proved to be one of the most fascinating destinations of the trip. Known for its geothermal activity and strong Māori heritage, the region offers visitors a unique insight into New Zealand’s indigenous culture.

A special evening at Te Puia combined a guided geothermal experience with a deeply moving introduction to Māori traditions, storytelling, music and dance. The warmth, spirituality and hospitality shown throughout the evening left a lasting impression and was undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences of the entire journey.

The following morning brought a visit to the National Kiwi Hatchery before a wonderfully relaxing wellness experience at Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa. If time allows, I would strongly recommend clients spend at least two or three nights in Rotorua to fully appreciate everything the region has to offer.

Christchurch and the Journey West

Flying south to Christchurch marked the beginning of our South Island adventure.

Often overlooked by visitors eager to reach Queenstown, Christchurch deserves far more attention. We enjoyed an exceptional evening with Āmiki Cultural Food Tours, combining local cuisine, wine pairings and storytelling during a guided walking tour through the city. Our guide, Rewi, brought Christchurch’s history and culture to life in a way that was both engaging and memorable.

Our accommodation for the evening was The George, a beautiful boutique hotel that perfectly balances luxury, comfort and genuine Kiwi hospitality.

The following morning we boarded one of New Zealand’s most iconic rail journeys – the TranzAlpine. Travelling through Arthur’s Pass in the Premium Scenic Plus carriage, we witnessed some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes from panoramic viewing carriages. Mountains, rivers, forests and dramatic alpine scenery unfolded around every corner.

Arriving in Greymouth, we continued by road to Franz Josef. The drive along the West Coast was simply breathtaking, with rainforest, rugged coastline and mountain scenery combining to create one of the most scenic journeys I have ever experienced.  The weather was not on our side in Franz Josef, we did however thoroughly enjoy the hospitality at the beautiful Legacy Te Waonui Hotel, what a treat.

The journey from Franz Josef to Queenstown was every bit as memorable as the destinations themselves. Travelling through ever-changing landscapes of rugged coastline, rainforest and snow-capped peaks, there were photo opportunities at almost every turn.

A highlight along the way was a stop in Hokitika, where we enjoyed a casual lunch at one of the region’s most talked-about local sandwich spots — the perfect chance to stretch our legs and soak up a taste of small-town West Coast life.

Continuing south, we made a short but stunning detour to Lake Wānaka for  yet another picture-perfect moment. From there, a short drive and we arrived in Queenstown, one of New Zealand’s most iconic regions.

Queenstown – The Adventure Capital of the World

For me personally, Queenstown was one of the destinations I had been most excited to visit, and it exceeded every expectation.

Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, Queenstown is one of the most spectacularly positioned towns I have ever visited. The scenery alone is enough to justify the journey, but the vibrant atmosphere, excellent dining scene, boutique shopping and outdoor lifestyle elevate it even further.

A visit to nearby Arrowtown revealed a completely different side of the region. This beautifully preserved historic gold-mining town, framed by stunning autumn colours during our visit, was an absolute delight.

We also enjoyed a wonderful lunch and wine pairing at Kinross Wine Estate, which offers charming onsite accommodation and would make an excellent addition to any Queenstown itinerary.

Of course, no visit to Queenstown would be complete without a little adventure. A ride on the famous Shotover Jet certainly delivered an adrenaline rush, while watching others prepare for bungy jumps was quite enough excitement for me!

Our accommodation at The Rees Hotel was exceptional. Overlooking Lake Wakatipu, the property combines luxurious accommodation with spectacular lake and mountain views. From couples seeking a romantic getaway to families requiring spacious apartments and villas, it offers something for every type of traveller. The dining experience, service and hospitality were all outstanding.

Milford Sound – A True Bucket List Experience

One of the absolute highlights of the trip was our journey to Milford Sound.

Travelling through Fiordland National Park by luxury coach offered incredible scenery before we boarded the MV Sinbad for a memorable five-course tasting lunch cruise. Waterfalls cascaded down towering cliffs while dramatic peaks emerged through the mist, creating scenery that almost defies description.

Just when we thought the day couldn’t become any more special, we returned to Queenstown aboard a small aircraft, enjoying a spectacular aerial perspective of the Southern Alps and surrounding wilderness.

It was, without question, a bucket-list experience.

Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo – Just when I thought it could not get any better!!

As our journey drew to a close, we travelled through the spectacular Mackenzie region towards Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo.

Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain, provided yet another reminder of the country’s extraordinary natural beauty. Experiencing the alpine scenery both from the ground and by helicopter was truly unforgettable.

Lake Tekapo offered a completely different but equally magical experience. Internationally renowned for its dark skies, the region is one of the world’s premier stargazing destinations. Our evening began with a guided astronomy experience before we relaxed in hot springs beneath a sky filled with stars. Listening to Māori stories and legends while soaking in warm waters under the night sky felt like the perfect conclusion to an extraordinary journey.

The following morning’s 4WD adventure through the surrounding countryside provided one final opportunity to appreciate the beauty of this remarkable country before returning to Christchurch for our journey home.

New Zealand is one of those rare destinations that genuinely lives up to the hype. The landscapes are extraordinary, the people are warm and welcoming, and the diversity of experiences is remarkable. In just 10 days we experienced vibrant cities, world-class wine regions, Māori culture, geothermal wonders, glaciers, fjords, mountains, lakes and some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.

If there was one lesson I took away from this trip, it is that New Zealand deserves time. While this whirlwind itinerary offered a wonderful overview, I left with a long list of places I would happily return to explore in greater depth.

My sincere thanks go to Southern World Vacations for hosting such an inspiring and unforgettable journey. I returned home with a camera full of photographs, countless wonderful memories and an even greater appreciation for what makes New Zealand such a truly special destination.
