Crystal Serenity - The Cruise That Converted Me

From Venice to Athens: A Week on Crystal Serenity
From the moment we stepped on board in Venice, it was an incredible experience from beginning to end.

Setting Sail from Venice

Our journey began in Venice before sailing to Trieste, which was a lovely first stop. It was the perfect opportunity to get out and explore, wander through the streets and soak up the atmosphere before settling into life on board.

Discovering Dubrovnik

Next came Dubrovnik, and this was one of those places where you immediately understand why it is so popular.

I walked the famous Old City walls, looking down over the terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. Having watched Game of Thrones, I could suddenly see exactly why Dubrovnik was chosen as such an important filming location. Seeing it in real life made the connection completely obvious.

Beach Club Bliss in Corfu

From there, we sailed on to Corfu, where we spent the day at a beautiful beach club. After all the sightseeing, it was absolute bliss to simply relax, enjoy the sunshine, swim, eat, drink and take in those incredible surroundings.

Kefalonia at Your Own Pace

Then came Kefalonia, which was one of the real highlights of the trip. Rather than doing an organised excursion, we hired a local driver and set off to explore for ourselves. We visited some incredible parts of the island, including the famous Myrtos Beach and the picturesque town of Fiskardo, and stopped for a beautiful lunch along the way. There is something very special about exploring somewhere like Kefalonia at your own pace. The scenery was spectacular, but it was the little moments, the winding roads, stopping for photographs, discovering beautiful corners and sitting down for lunch, that made the day so memorable.

Stepping Back in Time in Monemvasia

Our final port was Laconia, where we explored the extraordinary old town of Monemvasia. I genuinely do not think I have ever experienced anywhere quite like it. Walking through the ancient gateway and into the maze of narrow streets, stone buildings and little shops and cafés felt like stepping into another world. It was one of those places where you simply stop and take it all in.

And then, before we knew it, it was time to disembark in Athens.

First-Time Cruiser… Unexpectedly Converted

Seven nights had absolutely flown by, but it was Crystal Serenity that really stole the show. As beautiful as the destinations were, what surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the ship itself. This cruise experience is something quite different from what I had imagined cruising to be.

I had expected the clientele to be much older, but I could not have been more wrong. There was such a wonderful mix of people on board: multi-generational families, couples, honeymooners and travellers of all different ages. I loved that. There was a real sense of elegance and luxury, but it never felt stuffy or old fashioned. The ship was stylish, beautifully maintained and incredibly comfortable, while still having a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

Dining That Steals the Show

The food was a real highlight. Food was probably the single biggest standout for me, and that is saying something because there were so many things to love about the ship. I was incredibly lucky to experience each of the three Michelin-star restaurants on board, and every dining experience felt like an occasion in itself. From beautifully presented dishes to the quality of the ingredients and the service that came with it, the food on Crystal Serenity was genuinely unlike anything I have experienced at sea before. For a food lover, this alone is a very compelling reason to experience Crystal.

Suite Life on the Sapphire Deck

I stayed in a Sapphire Suite and it was fabulous. The space, the finishes and, particularly, the balcony were incredible. There is something very special about waking up, opening the curtains and having the sea stretching out in front of you. Every morning brought a different view, and I found myself looking forward to that moment each day.

Little Touches, Six-Star Feel

And then there was the butler service. Having breakfast delivered to your suite in the morning, returning from a day ashore to find canapés waiting before dinner, having garments pressed and laundry taken care of: these are the little touches that elevate a holiday from luxury to something that genuinely feels six star. Nothing felt like too much trouble.

Why This Experience Matters for My Clients

So, has Crystal converted me to cruising? Absolutely.

Would I now say that every cruise is for me? Probably not.

But that is exactly why I think my experience is so valuable to share with my clients.

If, like me, you have always thought “I am not really a cruiser”, I would say do not write it off until you have experienced the right cruise line.

Crystal Serenity showed me that cruising can be incredibly luxurious, stylish, gastronomic and relaxed, while still giving you the opportunity to explore some truly amazing destinations. You unpack once, wake up somewhere different, step ashore and explore, and then return to the comfort of your ship. And when that ship happens to be Crystal Serenity, you are returning to exceptional food, beautiful surroundings, outstanding service and a team who make you feel genuinely looked after.

A Gold Trip to Remember

What made this trip particularly memorable for me was the reason I was there in the first place. Being invited on the Crystal Serenity Gold Trip 2026 as part of Travel Counsellors’ recognition of our top performing Gold travel professionals was a huge privilege. Sharing the experience with wonderful Travel Counsellors colleagues from Ireland, the UK, Holland and South Africa made it even more special. It was a trip filled with incredible destinations, amazing food, plenty of laughter and memories that I know I will have for a very long time.

The Girl Who Was Not a Cruiser

And perhaps the biggest surprise of all?

The girl who never really considered herself a cruiser is now very open to doing it all over again.
