South Africa: A Journey That Stays With You

Mandy Ellis on 16 Apr 2026

South Africa is one of those rare places that gets under your skin and stays with you long after you return home. From powerful, moving encounters with its history to golden savannahs filled with wildlife and stylish lodges where every detail is taken care of, it is a country of contrasts and unforgettable moments. In this blog I share highlights from my own recent journey, from township tours and tasting menus to intimate safari experiences, to give you a feel for what your own South African adventure could look like.

Of all the places I have visited, South Africa holds some of my most special travel memories. So when the opportunity came to return, I simply could not say no.

I had previously explored Cape Town and the Garden Route on a self‑drive holiday and knew then that South Africa was somewhere truly unique. This time, we flew from Dublin to Johannesburg via London Heathrow with British Airways on the A380. We travelled in World Traveller Plus, the airline’s premium economy cabin, and for an overnight flight of around 11 hours the extra legroom, enhanced seating and more personal service felt absolutely worth the upgrade.

First Stop: Johannesburg & Soweto

On arrival into Johannesburg, we cleared formalities, collected our luggage and were soon on our way to our first experience: a visit to Lebo’s in Soweto for a traditional lunch cooked over an open fire, followed by a tuk tuk tour of the township.

Lebo's Tuk Tuk tour

This was a cultural awakening and, for me, one of the real highlights of the trip. As we zig‑zagged through the streets, dodging potholes and weaving between everyday life, we gained a genuine glimpse into what it means to live in Soweto. We met children eager for a high five, who may have very little in material terms but share the warmest smiles.

Our tuk tuk stopped at Nelson Mandela’s former residence, where we learned more about South Africa’s turbulent history and the extraordinary resilience of its people. It was a moving and thought‑provoking experience that I would highly recommend including in any visit to Johannesburg.

That evening we checked into our first hotel, The Catalyst, a contemporary property with a sleek, modern design, small outdoor pool and a relaxed, urban feel. It made for a practical and comfortable base for exploring the city. Later, we headed to Nelson Mandela Square, a lively hub of restaurants, bars and shopping. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at The Butcher Shop & Grill and sampled local boerewors, which I can highly recommend.

Into the Bush: Laluka Lodge

The next morning we packed up and drove around three and a half hours north to Welgevonden Nature Reserve for a two‑night safari stay. On arrival at Laluka Farm we were welcomed with cold towels, drinks and snacks before transferring by safari jeep to our home for the next few days: Laluka Lodge.

Words barely do justice to this property. With only six suites, it feels wonderfully intimate and exclusive, and would be perfect for a multi‑generational family or small group to take over on a private basis. Each spacious suite offers king or twin beds, an open‑plan bathroom with views over the bush, an outdoor shower and a private plunge pool. It is incredibly romantic and would be ideal for a honeymoon or special celebration.

After a couple of hours to settle in, we headed out for our first afternoon game drive. Almost immediately we began spotting wildlife: wildebeest, warthogs, jackals and zebra. As the light softened, we stopped for sundowners and our guides set up a beautiful spread of drinks and snacks from the bonnet of the jeep. Standing in a clearing, watching wildebeest close by as the sun slipped below the horizon, was one of those pinch‑me safari moments that will stay with me for a long time.

Back at the lodge, we freshened up and enjoyed a delicious three‑course dinner. The food throughout our stay was superb, with real care and creativity in every course.

Safari Days: Wildlife, Wellness & Wonderful Food

The following day we had two game drives: an early morning departure at 6.30 am and an afternoon drive around 3.30 pm. Between the two we traversed the beautiful, varied landscape in search of wildlife, and we were not disappointed. Over the course of our stay we saw rhino, giraffe, hyena, baboons, plenty of zebra and, most memorably of all, an incredible encounter with a lion and lioness. Sitting quietly in their company, you really appreciate how privileged you are to be in their world.

Between drives there was time to enjoy the lodge facilities. I treated myself to a wonderful massage in the spa, a perfect way to unwind after the early start. We were also treated to a show‑cooking lunch, where the chefs prepared our meal in front of us as we sat around the kitchen island picking up tips and techniques. It was fun, interactive and very tasty, and added another special memory to the trip.

On our final morning at Laluka we headed out for one last game drive, reluctant to say goodbye to this heavenly place and its warm, attentive team.

A Stylish Finale: Fairlawns Hotel, Johannesburg

From Welgevonden we travelled back to Johannesburg for our last night at the five‑star Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa. Hidden away from the bustle of the city, this feels like an oasis of calm. Rooms and suites are spread across several buildings, each individually designed with its own character. Everywhere you look there are striking pieces of art and thoughtful design touches, making the whole property feel more like a private estate than a city hotel.

The hotel features a lovely outdoor pool, along with an indoor spa pool and a number of treatment rooms. In the evening we enjoyed a seven‑course tasting menu paired with South African wines, which was a real highlight. For anyone looking for a wow‑factor hotel in Johannesburg and happy to treat themselves a little, this is a fantastic choice.

History, Regeneration & One Last Goodbye

On our final morning we met our guide for a tour of Constitution Hill. This is a sobering but important experience, giving an insight into the conditions in which people were once held and the long journey South Africa has taken to become the democracy it is today.

From there we continued to Victoria Yards, a dynamic regeneration project that has transformed former industrial buildings into a creative hub of artists’ studios, small shops and foodie spots. It is a great place to pick up unique pieces and sample locally produced food, and it gave us a lovely final taste of Johannesburg’s modern, creative side.

All too soon it was time to say goodbye to South Africa. We boarded our comfortable overnight flight back to London and onward to Dublin, already talking about when we might return.

South Africa offers an incredible blend of wildlife, culture, history, food and wine, all wrapped in warm hospitality and stunning landscapes. Whether you are dreaming of your first safari, a romantic escape, or a multi‑centre adventure combining city, coast and winelands, I would be delighted to help you create your own unforgettable South African journey.
