Holland America – Zuiderdam

Stepping aboard the Zuiderdam (pronounce Zou-der-Dam), the elegant vessel of Holland America Line, I was immediately struck by the perfect blend of classic charm and modern luxury that set the tone for an unforgettable afternoon onboard.

This ship is one of 4 Vista Class ships, which are a series of medium sized cruise ships. The name Vista comes from the amount of glass used around the ship which means the majority of the staterooms on board have ocean views or balconies. The other 3 ships in the Visa Class are Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam, all named after points on the compass.

She was first launched in 2002, and has been maintained well and is still a popular ship in the fleet. We visited the world stage which is the theatre onboard which spans 3 decks. This is where you will go for lectures and daily entertainment as well as shows in the evening. We walked through the casino as well as some dedicated music areas like Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard.

We walked through the Pinnacle Bar and Grill which is Holland Americas signature dining venue. We also visited the main dining room, which spans 2 decks. I was particularly impressed with the Lido decks retractable pool, which was covered over for it’s day in Cobh, but I thought was such a great versatile feature. The MS Zuiderdam is cruising around Canada and New England to catch those beautiful fall colours, before moving to 21 to 35 day cruises around the Caribbean for Christmas period. She starts her Grand World Voyage from Fort Lauderdale on the 4th of January.

This is a lovely ship which covers some fantastic itineraries. Holland America were the first company to start cruising around Alaska so they have some of the best permits in the area, making them a fantastic choice for an Alaskan Cruise.
