Seeing Souks in Style: A Luxury Escape to Morocco

Jessica Anhold on 17 Nov 2025

Have you ever stepped off a plane and instantly felt you’d entered another world? That’s Morocco - a place where the golden light glows, spices dance in the air, and every encounter is a sensory delight. For years, Morocco hovered on my own travel wish list. I’ll admit, there was a faint worry: would it be too overwhelming, too hectic for someone who prefers soft sheets over sleeping bags? Let’s be real, I adore an adventure, but I never travel without a touch of comfort.

When the Moroccan Tourist Board invited me - and a select group of Irish travel experts - on a whirlwind luxury exploration, I leapt at the chance. Morocco, it turns out, is a dream for lovers of style, history, and top-tier experiences. Here’s why it should be at the very top of your list.

Agadir: Chic Sun-Kissed Relaxation
We began our journey with a direct flight from Dublin to Agadir (a breezy 3 hours 30 minutes on Aer Lingus or Ryanair)—and were instantly greeted by balmy 23-degree sunshine. Agadir is a firm favourite for Moroccan holidaymakers and discerning international visitors. It boasts a golden beach lined with luxury hotels like The View, Sofitel, and Riu, as well as charming boutique riads such as the gorgeous Riad Villa Blanche. For top views over the city and ocean, hop on the cable car up to the ancient Kasbah. Spend lazy afternoons at the vibrant marina with its array of shops, elegant restaurants, and the option to set sail on a sunset boat tour.

Don’t miss Souk El Had, one of Morocco’s largest markets, home to over 6,000 stalls. Here, local life hums amid piles of spices, vibrant pottery, intricate carpets, and colourful textiles. Looking for ultimate “barefoot luxury?” Take a quick trip to nearby Taghazout Bay. This bohemian-chic surf town is a magnet for stylish jet-setters, thanks to five-star addresses like the Fairmont, Hilton, and Hyatt Regency, as well as all-inclusive gems such as Riu Palace Tikida and Pickalbatross.

Essaouira: Bohemian Beauty by the Sea
A scenic coastal drive leads to magical Essaouira, where whitewashed medina walls meet the wild Atlantic waves. This UNESCO World Heritage city has long attracted artists and free spirits - picture Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Cat Stevens wandering its ramparts. Today, Essaouira blends laid-back charm with luxury; think boutique stays like the riotously colourful Salut Maroc!, with panoramic sea views and a rooftop restaurant perfect for sunset cocktails.

Take time to stroll the historic medina, browse art galleries, and watch fishermen land the day’s catch before feasting on ultra-fresh seafood. The city’s famous wind will keep you cool as you explore or enjoy one of the world’s best spots for kitesurfing. Stay a night or two to really soak up the relaxed ambiance and savour slow mornings over Moroccan pastries and strong coffee.

Marrakech: The Pulse of Morocco
Finally, we arrived in Marrakech - the legendary “Red City" so named for it's beautiful ochre coloured walls. Here, the history, creativity, and opulence of Morocco come together in unforgettable style. Lose yourself in the maze of souks, where craftsmen shape leather, brass, and ceramics as they have for centuries. Visit the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square where snake charmers and musicians perform under twinkling lanterns.

Luxury is woven into every moment, whether you’re retreating to a tranquil courtyard at the five-star Nobu Hotel or discovering the hidden wonders of an opulent riad like El Fenn, where every doorway reveals a new world of colour and calm. Culture lovers can admire botanical splendour at Jardin Majorelle (don’t miss the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door), or marvel at historic jewels like Bahia Palace.

A Feast for the Soul and Senses
Morocco’s cuisine is an art form - fragrant tagines, melt-in-the-mouth breads, patisserie with Parisian flair, and, of course, the ritual of sweet, perfumed mint tea. Our dinner at Le Tobsil—set to the sound of local musicians in a lantern-lit salon, felt like being welcomed into a Moroccan home. The warmth and pride of the people is truly unforgettable.

Now Is the Time
Everywhere, I was amazed to see Morocco investing for the future: new luxury hotels, beautiful promenades, and even a high-speed intercity railway, all ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The world will soon discover this country anew so now is the time to experience its magic before the secret’s out!

We ended our adventure with a direct flight from Marrakech to Dublin (just 3 hours 50 minutes), passing through a modern, well-run airport; one last reminder of how accessible this stunning country is from Ireland.

Morocco has truly captured my heart, and I know it will capture yours. Ready to discover souks in style, taste the best of North Africa, and create stories you’ll be swapping for years to come?
