Snow capped Trees

Christmas Magic

Claire Shoer on 19 Nov 2025

There are some trips that feel less like a holiday and more like stepping into a storybook. Lapland at Christmas is one of them. From the moment you step out into the crisp Arctic air and see soft snow piled high on the trees, it feels as though you have walked straight into your children’s favourite Christmas film.

It was lovely to slow down after travelling, to find a café for something hot to drink, to watch the children’s faces as they took in the snow and the Christmas lights, and to feel that mix of excitement and calm that comes with finally arriving somewhere you have been dreaming about for so long.

The next day was the one the children had been waiting for. We headed to Santa Claus Village, where the Christmas magic is everywhere you look.  Meeting Santa himself was a truly magical experience. This is not a rushed visit. The children had time to chat, to show how carefully they had written their lists, and to soak up every second. While we were there, we also crossed the Arctic Circle, a special moment for the whole family. Standing together on that famous line in the snow and then receiving a certificate to mark the occasion made it feel even more memorable.

On the following day, we visited Santa Park, which was great fun for the little ones and full of festive activities. It is the kind of place where children can feel like Santa’s helpers for the day. A half day here is possibly enough, especially for younger children, but you can easily stay longer if you wish. There are chances to get creative and hands-on: making your own Christmas ornament to take home and decorating a Christmas cookie, which the children were delighted with. There is also an entertaining Christmas acrobatics show on display, full of energy and colour, which keeps everyone’s attention. For families who cannot get enough of Santa, there is even another opportunity to meet him at Santa Park if you wish, adding an extra sprinkle of magic to your trip.

Around these headline days, there is still so much to enjoy. Reindeer sleigh rides are a beautiful way to experience the snowy forests. Wrapped in thick blankets, you glide quietly through the trees, bells softly jingling as the reindeer pull you along. It feels calm, timeless and very special. Husky safaris bring a little more excitement. Children love meeting the dogs, then feeling the rush as the sled takes off across the snow.

Travelling somewhere so different can feel a little daunting, especially with young children, but with the right planning it is surprisingly smooth. As your personal Travel Counsellor, I can help you choose the Lapland experience that fits your family: from short, focused Santa breaks to slightly longer stays that give you time to explore and relax.
