Christmas in New York
New York at Christmas does not always mean snowflakes and woolly hats. Sometimes the city swaps icy pavements for blue skies and crisp sunshine, and that is exactly how it felt on this trip. The weather was mild and bright, coats stayed open, and yet there was still that unmistakable festive buzz in the air. Fairy lights were already wrapped around the trees, shop windows were dressed for the season, and you could hear the odd Christmas song drifting out of cafés as you wandered by. It might not have been freezing, but the city still felt wonderfully Christmassy perfect for strolling through Central Park, browsing the holiday markets without shivering, and enjoying that magical build-up to the big day in one of the world’s most exciting cities.
No pre‑Christmas visit to New York is complete without calling into the classic department stores, and we ticked off all the essentials. Macy’s was a real highlight floor after floor of fashion, beauty, homeware and gifts, with staff very much in the festive spirit. The Christmas window displays were absolutely fantastic, with intricate scenes and plenty of nostalgic touches that had crowds gathered on the pavement taking photos. Along the way we dipped in and out of the regular Fifth Avenue and Midtown favourites, soaking up the buzz, watching people rush by with their shopping bags and coffee cups, and just enjoying that unmistakable New York energy. One of my favourite stops was Bryant Park. It feels a little more intimate than some of the city’s bigger winter attractions, and to me it had a very family‑friendly atmosphere. The ice rink is on a slightly smaller scale than Rockefeller Center, which makes it feel more relaxed and less daunting for younger or less confident skaters. Around it, the park transforms into a charming winter village Stalls and chalets filled with Christmas ornaments, handmade gifts and decorations. A cosy, festive ambiance that invites you to linger with a hot chocolate and simply people‑watch It is one of those places where you can easily spend a couple of hours just wandering, snacking, and picking up unique Christmas presents.
A taste of Italy in the heart of Manhattan .
We also made time to step away from the shops and enjoy a good lunch. We headed to an area with a distinctly Italian feel think cosy restaurants, and that relaxed, authentic atmosphere that makes you want to order a glass of wine and stay a little longer. It was the perfect pause in the middle of a busy shopping day. Plates of delicious Italian food, chat about what we had bought so far, and a chance to recharge before diving back into the streets of Manhattan.
Broadway magic: Aladdin
Whenever I go to New York, I always try to see a Broadway show, and this trip was no exception. We chose Aladdin and it was absolutely fantastic. From the moment the curtain went up, it was bright, colourful and full of energy. The staging, costumes and music created a real sense of spectacle, and it felt like the perfect evening out after a day of shopping. For clients, I would always recommend adding at least one Broadway show into a New York itinerary, especially at this time of year when the nights are dark and the theatres feel particularly cosy and inviting.
Designer bargains at Jersey Gardens
Of course, New York is not just about flagship stores. We also set aside time to head out to Jersey Gardens for some serious outlet shopping. The journey was very straightforward a simple bus ride out and back, which made the whole experience very convenient and stress‑free. Once there, we had access to a great selection of designer and high‑street brands at outlet prices ideal for stocking up on clothes, trainers, bags and gifts without blowing the budget. It is easy to see why many shoppers make this a key part of their New York trip.
Overall, it was a wonderful few days spent in New York. The sun was shining, the Christmas build‑up was in full swing, and there was a real sense of excitement in the air. Between browsing department stores, admiring the festive window displays, gliding past the ice rink at Bryant Park, lingering over Italian lunches, being swept away by Broadway, and hunting for bargains at Jersey Gardens, it felt like the perfect pre‑Christmas escape.
