Why Washington?

Why Washington?

When clients think about a North American city break, the usual names come up first: New York, Boston, Chicago. But suggest Washington DC and you will instantly offer something a little different, without compromising on excitement, history or value. It is a city that consistently exceeds expectations.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a 3‑night escape, flying direct with Aer Lingus into Washington Dulles. Our base was the superb The Dupont Circle, part of the Doyle Collection, which gave us a stylish and very comfortable home right in the heart of the city. The transfer from the airport took around 40 minutes and, even on that journey, you begin to sense the weight of history as you pass a series of iconic monuments and memorials.

A weekend of big‑ticket highlights We arrived with an action‑packed weekend planned and started as we meant to go on: with a pre‑booked tour of the Pentagon. It was both fascinating and slightly surreal to be walking the corridors of such an important building. Tours must be requested at least 14 days in advance and places are subject to approval, but the best part is that it is completely free.

That really sets the tone for Washington DC. No other city I have visited offers so many world‑class experiences at no cost. It has truly earned its tagline: “The capital of free things to do.”

Getting your bearings: Hop‑on, hop‑off As with any city break, I highly recommend a hop‑on, hop‑off bus tour at the start of your stay. It is a simple way to understand the layout and decide where you would like to linger later.

In Washington DC there are two main routes:

Black route: Takes you to the major landmarks such as Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, Lincoln Memorial and many more of the classic sights. Red route: Focuses on downtown and some of the characterful neighbourhoods, including Georgetown and Columbia Heights, so you can experience a different side of the city. It is a relaxed, time‑efficient way to cover a lot of ground and build your own personalised sightseeing plan.

Inside the heart of American politics We also arranged a pre‑booked tour of Capitol Hill, which was another highlight and a must for anyone interested in politics, history or architecture. Walking through the building you usually only see on the news is an extraordinary experience.

Unfortunately, during our visit the White House was not open for tours, but it is always worth checking what is available for your dates, as access can change.

The National Mall is another area you simply cannot miss. Stretching through the centre of the city, it is lined with monuments, memorials and museums, including:

The Lincoln Memorial The Jefferson Memorial The National Museum of African American History and Culture You could easily spend several days just exploring this area alone.

A city of museums… that will not break the bank Washington DC is heaven for museum lovers, with over 70 to choose from, including the world‑famous Smithsonian collection. Whether your interests are art, space, natural history, culture or technology, there will be something that captivates you.

And yes, remarkably, so many of these museums and galleries are free to enter. For a capital city of this calibre, the value is incredible.

Why Washington works so well for a short break For a 3 to 4‑night break, Washington DC gives you:

A rich, walkable city centre full of history and iconic sights Dozens of world‑class museums and attractions, many of them free Easy touring options such as hop‑on, hop‑off buses to maximise your time Plenty of characterful neighbourhoods to discover beyond the main monuments You do not need a huge budget to enjoy a full itinerary, but you do need to plan. Many of the top experiences, such as the Pentagon and Capitol tours, must be reserved in advance, and some museums require timed entry slots.

I cannot recommend Washington DC highly enough. It is an inspiring, accessible city that offers exceptional value thanks to the sheer number of free things to see and do. If you would like tailored recommendations, help with pre‑booking key tours or putting together a smooth, well‑paced itinerary, I would be delighted to share my tips and first‑hand experience.
