River Cruises vs Ocean Cruises: Which Is Right for You?

Vicki Thompson on 14 October 2026
Cruising has had a glow-up in recent years. What used to be thought of as “just for retirees” is now one of the fastest-growing ways to travel, with options to suit everyone — from families and foodies to adventure-seekers.

But here’s the big question I get asked all the time: should I choose a river cruise or an ocean cruise?

Both are brilliant — but they offer very different experiences. Let’s break it down. Ocean Cruises

Think: floating resorts, endless entertainment, and waking up in a new country every day.

Destinations: Caribbean islands, Mediterranean ports, Alaska’s glaciers, Asia’s cities.

Ships: Big, bold, and packed with choice — from theatres and spas to waterparks, fine dining, and Broadway-style shows.

Vibe: Great for families, groups, and anyone who wants variety. You’ll never be bored.

Pros: Huge range of destinations, loads to do onboard, incredible value for what’s included.

Cons: Busy ships (sometimes thousands of passengers), and you only get a “taste” of each destination.

River Cruises

Think: boutique hotels gliding through the heart of Europe (and beyond), with culture on your doorstep.

Destinations: The Danube, Rhine, Seine, Douro, Nile, Mekong, Mississippi.

Ships: Sleek, elegant, with fewer passengers (usually 100–200). More intimate and personal.

Vibe: Relaxed, cultural, immersive. Daily excursions often included.

Pros: Dock right in the centre of cities and towns, no queues, inclusive excursions, slower pace, stunning scenery.

Cons: Less entertainment than ocean ships, fewer dining choices, not always suited to young children.

So, Which is Right for You?

If you love big, bold, busy and buzzing with endless choices ? Ocean cruise.

If you prefer intimate, cultural and calm with everything at your pace ? River cruise.

Why Not Both?

Many of my clients start with an ocean cruise for the excitement, then discover river cruising as their “slower, deeper” way to explore. (That’s exactly what I did — and now I sell both with equal passion!).

The Bottom Line

Both river and ocean cruises are brilliant — it just depends on what kind of traveller you are.

If you’d like help figuring out which type of cruise would suit you best, that’s where I come in. With first-hand experience of both, I can match you to the right line, ship, and itinerary to fit your style.

Because cruising isn’t just about where you go — it’s about how you get there.
