Christmas in New York 2027: Sail in Style with Cunard

There is nothing quite like New York at Christmas. The Rockefeller tree, the windows on Fifth Avenue, skating in Central Park and hot chocolate at Bryant Park ,it feels like stepping straight into a Christmas movie. And no, not Home Alone!

But what if the excitement began a whole week before you reached New York?

For Christmas 2027, I have put together an escape combining seven nights aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 with 6 nights in Manhattan. Leave Southampton on 14 December, arrive in New York on 21 December and spend Christmas enjoying the city before heading home on 27 December.

For couples, families or solo travellers who fancy doing something different for Christmas, this would be quite a way to celebrate.

Time to switch off

December can disappear in a blur of shopping, organising and making sure everyone else is having a lovely time. The thought of stepping aboard, unpacking and having a week ahead with no meals to prepare is rather appealing.

Queen Mary 2 brings a real sense of occasion to the journey. She is an ocean liner built for crossing the Atlantic, and those sea days give you time to settle in and enjoy being aboard.

Afternoon tea, served with Cunard’s white-gloved service, could become your new daily ritual. Take your time over dinner, enjoy live music or a theatre performance, and make an evening of dressing up for a Gala Evening.

During the day, you might choose a talk, a quiet spell in the library or simply a comfortable seat with a view of the ocean. Spa treatments and selected activities can be added at an extra cost.

An arrival to remember

There is something very special about approaching New York by sea. After days on the Atlantic, watching the Manhattan skyline come into view feels like the grand opening to the next part of your adventure.

Your arrival is on 21 December, just as the anticipation of Christmas reaches its peak. Once you have disembarked in Brooklyn, a private transfer takes you to Hotel Riu Plaza New York Times Square for six nights.

With Broadway on your doorstep and the bright lights of Times Square just a short walk away, this four-star hotel puts you right in the New York you’ve come to experience. Contemporary rooms offer a welcoming retreat after exploring, and an American buffet breakfast is included each morning.

What I particularly like is being able to pop back for a rest before heading out again for dinner and a show ,you can enjoy the excitement without feeling you have to stay out all day.

The Christmas movie moments

Seeing the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree would be high on my list. You do not have to put on a pair of skates to enjoy the atmosphere ,watching from the sidelines is quite enough if, like me, you would rather keep your feet firmly on the ground!

Then there are Fifth Avenue’s festive windows, a wander through Central Park and time browsing Bryant Park’s seasonal stalls with something warm to drink.

I would leave room for an evening at the theatre, too. A Broadway musical or a seasonal performance could make a lovely addition, with dinner beforehand and a walk back through the bright lights afterwards.

For something beyond Manhattan, a Christmas lights tour to Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights neighbourhood is another possibility, where homes and gardens put on dazzling festive displays.

Christmas Day, your way

One of the nicest things about being away for Christmas is deciding how you want to spend it.

A leisurely breakfast, a walk in the city and a special Christmas lunch or dinner  with someone else taking care of the cooking and washing up , sounds rather lovely to me.

This is one part I would plan ahead. Christmas dining needs advance reservations, and some attractions, shops and restaurants have different opening hours over the holiday. A little preparation means you can enjoy the day without wandering around looking for somewhere to eat.

I have allowed six nights in New York so you can enjoy Boxing Day as well, rather than packing your cases straight after Christmas. Your planned journey home is on 27 December, with a private transfer to JFK and a flight back to Heathrow.

What would a Christmas like this cost?

As a guide, this 13-night escape comes to approximately £3,695 per person, based on two sharing. That includes seven nights aboard Queen Mary 2 in a balcony stateroom, six nights at Hotel Riu Plaza New York Times Square with breakfast, private transfers from the cruise terminal to your hotel and from your hotel to JFK, plus an estimated economy flight home to Heathrow.

The hotel’s mandatory resort fee of US$174 plus tax per room for six nights is payable locally. Cruise gratuities and optional experiences are additional. The flight cost is estimated using December 2026 fares with an allowance for 2027. All prices are subject to availability and confirmation.

The details make the difference
