Abu Dhabi the perfect Emirate

When most people think of the United Arab Emirates, they picture ultra-modern skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and record-breaking theme parks.

My recent trip to Abu Dhabi completely busted the myth that the region’s story only started in the modern era. From 4,000-year-old oases to sensory art installations and 149 mph rollercoasters, Abu Dhabi is a destination of incredible contrasts.

Here is a look at my ultimate Abu Dhabi itinerary—and why it should be at the top of your travel list

🌴 Stepping Back in Time: Al Ain For history buffs, the real treasure lies inland in Al Ain—the historic cultural heartland of Abu Dhabi. Occupied continuously for over 4,000 years, it offers an extraordinary glimpse into how human ingenuity and traditional oasis life flourished in the Arabian desert. With Al Ain Oasis: Abu Dhabi’s first UNESCO World Heritage site is a living historical monument. Spanning over 1,200 hectares, this sprawling haven of 140,000 shaded date palms has sustained local settlements for millennia and Al Ain Museum: Located near the eastern edge of the oasis, this landmark site anchors the historic journey of the region and is essential for truly appreciating the deep timeline of the UAE.

🏜️ Deep Desert Magic in Al Wathba. Whether you’re planning a romantic honeymoon pause before heading into the city or a luxury family holiday, Al Wathba is the ultimate escape. While places further inland offer stunning mountain backdrops, Al Wathba delivers that classic, deep-desert seclusion much closer to the capital. During my time here, I got behind the wheel of a dune buggy to carve through the towering golden sands at sunset—an absolute must for thrill-seekers! But the magic of Al Wathba is that you can match your exact pace. Whether you prefer a serene sunset camel ride, a graceful horseback trek across the dunes, or just soaking up the views, this landscape delivers. Nestled right in the heart of the dunes is Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa. Think private plunge pool villas, world-class dining under the stars, and the incredible Saray Spa. It’s incredibly family-friendly, too, featuring a fantastic kids' pool complete with small slides so the little ones are just as well-catered for. It’s the perfect place to completely unwind.

🎢 High-Octane Escapism on Yas Island After the serene desert of Al Wathba, it was time for a change of pace. If there is one destination in the world designed from the ground up for pure, unfiltered escapism, it is Yas Island.

First up,Yas Waterworld: The Arabian sun requires tactical planning, and diving straight into this park is the ideal antidote. Built around an authentic Emirati pearl-diving legend, the absolute highlight is Jebel Drop, which drops you near-vertically with panoramic views across the island right before your stomach drops out. Secondly Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi: Stepping through the golden archways feels like stepping into a cinematic time capsule. Because the park is fully enclosed and climate-controlled, it remains delightfully cool. As a Batman fan, the moody, gritty Gotham City was incredible (the Batman: Knight Flight ride is an intense flight-sim experience, and grabbing coffee at Jitters is a must). Meanwhile, Cartoon Junction brings vintage Saturday-morning nostalgia to life with a meticulous mid-century animation aesthetic. Ferrari World: Even if motorsport isn't your usual cup of tea, this park demands a visit. The crown jewel remains Formula Rossa. Accelerating from 0 to 149 mph in 4.9 seconds flat, it subjects riders to 4.8G—a launch so fierce you are required to wear protective goggles! Yas Mall: Connecting directly to Ferrari World, this is the connective tissue of the island. Beyond offering every high-street and luxury brand imaginable, it acts as the perfect retreat to refuel. Grabbing a chilled coffee and browsing the Boutique Football Shirt store (Number 10) was a welcome pause between adrenaline highs.

Yas Island shows zero signs of slowing down, either. Harry Potter Land is slated for Warner Bros. World around 2029, and a massive Disneyland Abu Dhabi is expected between 2030 and 2033!

🎨 A Cultural Awakening: Saadiyat Cultural District To round off the trip, I headed to the Saadiyat Cultural District—an absolute must-visit that proves Abu Dhabi is a global heavyweight in art and history. Zayed National Museum: This space traces a staggering 300,000 years of human history, uncovering deep archaeological roots and ancient trading civilisations that thrived in the region long before 1971. Natural History Museum: A mesmerising journey through 13.8 billion years of our universe. Seeing 'Stan' the T. rex was incredible, but the absolute highlight was heading into the lab to get hands-on and touch real, ancient fossils. teamLab Phenomena: I finished off with a proper sensory overload. The ever-changing, immersive light and colour installations here are completely out of this world and easily my top pick of the district.

There is so much to see on Saadiyat Island that I didn't even have time for it all. On my next trip, I'll definitely be taking in the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Guggenheim, and the Abrahamic Family House—a stunning interfaith complex featuring a mosque, a church, and a synagogue. I will absolutely be adding at least one of these to every bespoke Abu Dhabi trip I put together.
