Beautiful Souks

Marrakesh City break

3 Perfect Days in Marrakech: Souks, Style & Slow Moments Here is exactly how we spent 3 days in Marrakech: a mini escape that blends sensory overload in the souks with calm gardens, design touches and some much needed pool and spa time at the end. If you are craving somewhere close to home yet totally different, Marrakech is an ideal long weekend city break for couples.

Where We Stayed: Les Jardins de la Médina

For our base, we chose Les Jardins de la Médina, a beautiful riad-style hotel tucked away behind the walls of the old city. From the outside it looks discreet and traditional, but step through the doors and you find lush gardens, palm trees, a peaceful pool and intimate corners to sit with a drink and just breathe.

It was the perfect contrast to the lively streets outside: we could explore the Medina within minutes, then retreat back to birdsong, greenery and calm whenever we needed a break. For a couples’ escape, that balance of location and tranquillity felt spot on.

Day 1: Souks, Tanneries & Jemaa el Fna

We arrived in Marrakech and, once we had dropped our bags at Les Jardins de la Médina, dived straight into the Medina. There is no better way to get a feel for the city than to step into its maze of alleyways and let your senses do the rest.

The souks are a riot of colour and sound: stalls piled high with leather slippers, woven baskets, brass lanterns and bright ceramics; the smell of spices and argan oil in the air; scooters and handcarts somehow threading through tiny streets. It feels chaotic at first, but there is a rhythm to it that becomes strangely addictive, especially when you are exploring side by side.

Curious about traditional crafts, we headed to the tanneries to see how leather is made using age‑old techniques. It is fascinating, raw and very real, so definitely one for those who like seeing the story behind the beautiful bags, belts and babouches in the shops.

We ended our first day in Jemaa el Fna, the main square, just as it was starting to come alive for the evening. Stalls appeared almost out of nowhere, grills fired up, and the whole square filled with chatter, smoke and music. You can eat at the food stalls for a very local experience, or head up to one of the many rooftop terraces around the square to watch it all from above with a mint tea or something stronger in hand.

Haggling is absolutely expected here, but it can feel daunting if you are not used to it. If that makes you nervous, I can arrange a trusted local guide so you can relax, enjoy the atmosphere together and know you are in safe hands when it comes to prices and navigating the maze.

Day 2: Yves Saint Laurent Museum, Jardin Majorelle & La Mamounia

After the vibrancy of the Medina, day two began with a calmer, design‑led start. We took a taxi to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the neighbouring Jardin Majorelle, one of Marrakech’s most iconic spots.

The museum is a beautifully curated celebration of Yves Saint Laurent’s work and connection with Morocco, and it sits right beside the famous gardens. Jardin Majorelle is all vivid Majorelle blue, sculptural cacti, bamboo and shady paths: it feels like stepping into a painting. It is busy, but still manages to feel peaceful and incredibly photogenic, especially if you love sharing travel snaps.

From there, we walked back towards the Medina, passing the Koutoubia Mosque with its elegant minaret, a constant landmark on the Marrakech skyline. It is one of those walks where the city gradually shifts from leafy boulevards back into the bustle of the old town, giving you time to chat, people‑watch and soak it all in together.

We ended the day at La Mamounia, one of Marrakech’s most legendary hotels. Whether you go for coffee, a cocktail or simply to wander the public areas, it is worth a stop just for the atmosphere: tiled courtyards, manicured gardens and a sense of old‑school glamour. It is perfect for a romantic pause and a bit of people‑watching before heading back to Les Jardins de la Médina for a quiet evening.

Day 3: Pool, Hammam & Long Lunch

After two full days exploring, our final day was all about slowing down.

We started with a lazy morning by the pool at Les Jardins de la Médina, soaking up the sun and enjoying that feeling of being somewhere warm and exotic, yet only a short flight from home. Marrakech can be wonderfully intense, so having time to simply read, chat, dip in and out of the pool and do nothing is the perfect counterbalance.

Next up was a traditional hammam and massage. The hammam ritual, with steam, black soap and exfoliation, is both deeply cleansing and incredibly relaxing. Follow it with a massage and you emerge feeling like new people: exactly how you want to feel at the end of a couples’ mini‑break.

To finish, we lingered over a long lunch: mezze, tagine, fresh bread and salads, eaten slowly with no rush to be anywhere else. It was the ideal way to round off three days of sights, sounds and flavours before heading back to the airport.
