Mediterranean Magic Aboard Celebrity Edge: A Family Voyage to Remember

When you think of a perfect family summer holiday, effortless luxury, cultural richness, and a splash of adventure, our family cruise aboard Celebrity Edge in July 2023 ticked all the boxes and more. My family (two adults and two teens) embarked on a Mediterranean escape that blended historic wonders with indulgent relaxation. We set sail from Civitavecchia, the port gateway to Rome, on 29 July 2023. Embarkation was smooth and stress-free, a welcome start for any travelling parent. As we stepped aboard Celebrity Edge, it was clear we were in for something special. The ship is a modern masterpiece, boasting a sleek design and innovative features, such as the Magic Carpet, a floating platform that moves between decks, offering breathtaking sea views. Our first port of call was Florence/Pisa (La Spezia), a day packed with art, architecture and gelato. The kids were surprisingly taken with the grandeur of Florence’s Duomo and even more amused by the “wonky” Leaning Tower of Pisa. There’s something about standing in the shadow of centuries-old landmarks that puts history into vivid perspective, far more engaging than any classroom. Next came Ajaccio, Corsica, with its relaxed island charm and Napoleonic heritage. We opted for a casual day, strolling the seafront, sampling local charcuterie, and swimming in the warm Mediterranean waters. Ajaccio offered the perfect balance of culture and downtime. Portofino was like stepping into a postcard. Chic, colourful, and utterly charming, it’s the sort of place where you feel inspired just wandering through the narrow lanes. We enjoyed an espresso in the piazza while the teens snapped endless photos for their socials. Cannes brought a dash of glamour. While we didn’t catch a film star, we did walk the famous Croisette and enjoy a bit of boutique browsing. The atmosphere was electric, bustling yet refined. A sea day followed, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Celebrity Edge excels when it comes to onboard experience. The kids made the most of the pool and entertainment areas, while we enjoyed a wine tasting and some well-earned quiet in the adults-only Solarium. The ship’s cuisine deserves a mention too; each meal felt like dining out at a top-tier restaurant, and there were plenty of family-friendly options. Then came Palma de Mallorca, with its stunning Gothic cathedral and relaxed island vibe. We explored the old town and indulged in tapas under the shade of lemon trees. Our final stop was Barcelona, where we disembarked and stayed two nights at the Petit Palace Boquería Garden. Tucked away just off Las Ramblas, this boutique hotel was a gem, stylish, central, and surprisingly peaceful given its location. Barcelona was the perfect finale. From the wonders of Gaudí to beachside dining and buzzing markets, the city captured all our hearts. In all, this journey was a seamless blend of discovery, indulgence, and family connection. Celebrity Edge offered sophistication without stuffiness, ideal for families with older children looking for a travel experience that’s equal parts cultural and comfortable.
