Athens in a Day: How to Make the Most of a Short Stopover in Greece’s Historic Capital

Nicola Browne on 10 October 2023
Athens instantly became one of my favourite cities. On a recent cruise, I had a late flight home, so I seized the opportunity to enjoy a day trip into the city. With just a few hours to explore, I was still able to experience its rich history, iconic landmarks and lively neighbourhoods.

Dropping bags and getting your bearings I started by taking a taxi into the city and dropping my luggage at a baggage storage near Syntagma Square. This made it easy to explore hands free before heading to the airport later that evening.

To get my bearings, I hopped on the local tourist train, which cost around €7 for roughly an hour. It was a simple, relaxed way to see the main sights, understand the layout of the city, and decide where to spend the rest of my time.

Exploring the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus From the tourist train stop, I walked to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, then continued up to Acropolis Hill to visit the Parthenon. The Acropolis is Athens’ most famous landmark and feels every bit as impressive in person as you would imagine. Here you will find:

The Parthenon The Temple of Athena Nike The Erechtheion From the top, you are rewarded with sweeping views over the city. It is a truly unmissable experience for any visitor to Athens.

At the foot of Acropolis Hill you will find the Acropolis Museum, home to fascinating artefacts from the archaeological site. With more time, it is well worth a visit to deepen your understanding of the history behind the ruins you are walking through.

Plaka and Monastiraki: characterful neighbourhoods to wander Close to Acropolis Hill lies Plaka, the old quarter of Athens. This atmospheric district is a maze of narrow streets, dotted with local shops, traditional Greek restaurants and welcoming cafés. It feels very safe and is the perfect place to stroll, stop for a coffee and soak up the local atmosphere.

Nearby Monastiraki is known for its vibrant flea market. Here you can browse everything from antiques and curios to classic Greek souvenirs. It is a great spot if you like to pick up unique mementos from your travels.

Getting around: easy connections from port and airport I found transportation in Athens straightforward and good value. A taxi from the cruise port to Syntagma Square cost under €30, although there are also local buses available for just a few euro.

Later, I took the airport bus from Syntagma Square. Services run regularly, the journey takes around 45 minutes, and a one-way ticket is roughly €5. It is a very convenient option if you are planning a day in the city before an evening flight.

Why Athens works so well as a stopover or city break Even in a short visit, it is clear that Athens blends ancient history with modern energy. Classical ruins, bustling squares, friendly neighbourhoods and excellent transport links make it an ideal choice for:

A stopover on the way to or from the Greek islands A standalone city break packed with culture, food and sightseeing I will definitely be returning to Athens, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to combine iconic history with a vibrant city atmosphere.
