Sailing the Captivating Rhine: My 7‑Night Ama Viola River Cruise

Mandy Ellis on 06 Jun 2025

If you are intrigued by river cruising make sure to read all about my experience sailing on the Rhine.

There is something incredibly special about travelling by river: you never lose sight of the landscape, you glide straight into the heart of cities and charming towns, and life on board feels relaxed yet indulgent. My 7‑night “Captivating Rhine” sailing from Amsterdam to Basel aboard Ama Viola was exactly that: scenic, unhurried and wonderfully comfortable, with just the right touch of boutique luxury.

With around 170 passengers on board, Ama Viola feels intimate and boutique, never crowded or overwhelming. The atmosphere is casual and friendly: you can dress comfortably, wander up to the lounge whenever you wish and quickly get to know both fellow guests and crew.

The food was exceptional throughout the cruise. Thoughtfully presented dishes, regional specialities and plenty of choice made every meal something to look forward to. Service was warm, polished and personal, with staff very quickly remembering preferences and going out of their way to make each day feel special.

Food onboard Ama Viola

Life on a river cruise is very much about the scenery rather than high‑octane entertainment. There is usually some light evening entertainment or a relaxed drink in the lounge, but the real “show” is right outside: castles, vineyards, villages and city skylines drifting by as you sail. It is an ideal style of holiday if you enjoy gentle days, great food and exploring ashore.

There is also a strong wellness focus on Ama Waterways sailings. Onboard you will typically find a small gym, walking tracks on deck and a programme of activities such as stretching, yoga or gentle fitness classes, so you can balance indulgent dining with looking after your wellbeing.

For those keen to explore more actively, bikes are available on board. You can join guided bike tours in certain ports or simply take a bicycle out independently and follow riverside paths or local routes at your own pace.

Your Floating Hotel: Cabin Impressions

I stayed in a lower‑deck cabin with a small, narrow window close to the waterline. Space is more limited here than on the higher decks, which have French balconies or double balconies but the cabin was perfectly functional for its purpose: a comfortable bed, clever storage and a compact but well‑designed bathroom.

If you are the type of traveller who spends most of the day up on deck or ashore and mainly uses the cabin to sleep and change, this category can be a very practical choice. If, however, you enjoy more space and want to sit and watch the river from your room, it is worth considering an upgrade to a higher deck.

Day 1: Departure from Amsterdam

The journey begins in Amsterdam, where you embark Ama Viola and settle into life on board. There is time to unpack, explore the ship and enjoy your first dinner as you cruise out along the waterways, leaving the city lights behind. Watching the low, flat Dutch landscape glide by as you start to head south sets the tone for the days ahead.

Day 2: Discovering Düsseldorf

Our first full day brought us to Düsseldorf, a lively German city on the banks of the Rhine. Shore excursions are complimentary in every port with Ama Waterways, with various options to suit different interests and activity levels, and transport is provided where needed.

I joined a guided walking tour, a brilliant way to get an overview of the Altstadt (old town), the Rhine promenade and some of the city’s key landmarks. With a local guide leading the way, it was easy to appreciate the blend of historic buildings and modern architecture, and there was time to linger in pretty squares and along the riverfront.

All excursions can be easily booked via the Ama Waterways app, so it is very simple to select your preferred activities in advance or adjust as you go along.

Day 3: The Magical Rhine Gorge & Rüdesheim

Day 3 was one of my absolute highlights. I got up early to head to the top deck as we entered the Rhine Gorge, one of the most scenic stretches of river in Europe. Wrapped in a warm layer and with a hot drink in hand, I watched as the ship gently navigated twist after twist in the river, passing hilltop castles, steep vineyards and storybook villages.

Sailing along the Rhine Gorge

The commentary helpfully pointed out landmarks and shared legends of the Rhine, so you understood the history as well as enjoying the views. This is where river cruising really shines: no rushing from place to place, just time to sit back and let centuries of history drift by.

In the afternoon we called at Rüdesheim, a quintessential Rhine wine town. Here I took the wine gondola up over the vineyards to a stunning viewing point high above the town, with wonderful panoramic views over the river and surrounding valley. Afterwards, there was time to wander the cobbled streets below, browse little shops and soak up the relaxed wine‑country atmosphere.

Day 4: Speyer & Timeless Heidelberg

On Day 4 we arrived in Speyer, but I chose an included excursion to nearby Heidelberg. This historic university town is absolutely charming: a beautiful blend of romantic castle ruins, baroque architecture and riverside views along the Neckar.

The excursion included a guided tour that brought Heidelberg’s past to life, with its famous castle looking down from the hillside and the old bridge spanning the river. It is a larger, vibrant town, but still full of character. There was time to explore the old streets, perhaps enjoy a coffee in a café and soak up the student‑city energy before returning to the ship.

Day 5: Strasbourg & its Famous Cathedral Clock

Day 5 took us into Strasbourg, a city that beautifully fuses French and German influences. The old town, with its half‑timbered houses and narrow lanes, feels almost fairy‑tale in places.

I joined a walking tour that included a visit inside the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral. The highlight here is the famous astronomical clock, a fascinating and ornate piece of craftsmanship that has been captivating visitors for centuries. Our guide explained its workings and symbolism, making this more than just a quick photo stop. After the tour, there is usually some free time to wander the canals, browse boutiques or sample local specialities.

Day 6: Picture‑Perfect Colmar

Although not directly on the Rhine, Colmar is easily reached from the river and is one of the prettiest towns in the region. Day 6 was spent exploring this gorgeous, flower‑filled town, with its colourful medieval houses, cobbled streets and riverside quarter often nicknamed “Little Venice”.

I spent my time simply walking around and visiting the local market, admiring the beautifully kept facades and window boxes overflowing with blooms. Colmar feels like stepping inside a painting, with a relaxed, intimate atmosphere that is ideal for wandering at your own pace.

Day 7: Evening Arrival in Basel

On Day 7 we sailed into Basel in the evening, with time to walk around the city and get a feel for its character. Basel sits where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, and you can sense that blend in its architecture and cultural scene.

Even a few hours here give you a taste of its riverside promenades, historic squares and striking town hall. It is a lovely place to stretch your legs, enjoy a final wander and perhaps reflect on the week of sailing that has brought you through so many different landscapes and cultures.

Day 8: Farewell to the Rhine

The final morning is all about goodbyes: to the crew, to new friends and to the ever‑changing river views. After a week of shared meals, excursions and gentle days on the water, it is very easy to feel that you are leaving a small floating community behind.

I disembarked having made new friends and had a thoroughly enjoyable time, feeling that this style of travel shows you a side of Europe that is hard to reach any other way.

The Joys of River Cruising: Pros & Considerations

For me, the biggest “pro” of this itinerary is that it is an amazing way to travel through a country (and several, in fact) by river. You unpack once, your floating hotel moves with you, and each morning you wake up somewhere new without the stress of airports or long road transfers. The scenery is ever‑changing, and ports are often right in the heart of the town or city, so you step ashore straight into the action.

The included shore excursions are a real bonus: guided walks, city tours and special experiences in every port, with transport arranged where needed, make planning effortless. The ability to book and manage excursions via the Ama Waterways app keeps everything organised and simple.

If you enjoy active travel, the wellness activities and onboard bikes mean you can stay as energetic as you wish. If you prefer to relax, there is always the option to find a comfortable spot on deck or take a dip in the plunge pool and watch the world go by.

In terms of considerations, it is worth being aware that if you love large ocean cruise ships with big production shows, multiple bars and a buzzing nightlife, a river cruise will feel quieter. Entertainment is low key and more about conversation, scenery and good food than late‑night performances. For many guests this is actually the appeal, but it is important to choose the right style to suit your personality.

Cabin choice is another thing to think about: lower‑deck cabins are absolutely fine if you are happy with a compact space and a smaller window and prefer to spend most of your time around the ship. If views and extra space matter to you, it is worth considering a higher category.

If this style of journey appeals to you, I can tailor a river cruise experience to suit individual preferences: from cabin selection and pre or post cruise stays to specific excursion choices and travel arrangements.
