Reindeer in Lapland

Lapland

Our Family Adventure to Lapland

Lorraine Wynne on 27 Nov 2025

After a decade of helping families discover the magic of Lapland, I finally had the chance to experience it exactly as many of my clients do with my husband and our two little ones, Ava (6) and Danny (4).

I’ve sent countless families on this very trip, but nothing compares to watching your own children step into a world they’ve only imagined in bedtime stories.

First Impressions: Snow, Smiles and Pure Excitement

From the moment we landed, the landscape looked like something straight from a Christmas card soft snow, frosted trees and that crisp Arctic air that feels instantly festive. Our team of elves were ready and waiting, first stop was to get our snowsuits, boots, socks and gloves so that we could keep warm. Everything was organised so smoothly throughout the whole trip we could simply relax and take it all in. After years of hearing about this efficiency, it was lovely to experience it first hand.

We had a 40 minute drive from the airport to our hotel, the 4* Saaga hotel in Yllas and we settled into our cozy accommodation. We loved this hotel, warm and inviting, right at the bottom of a ski slope that allowed us lots of snow fun. The pool was a welcome bonus and we made use of it every evening.

A Day Filled With Arctic Magic

Our activity day was everything I hoped for and more. Watching Ava and Danny’s faces light up during each experience is something I’ll treasure forever.

The Husky Ride

The highlight for both children was most definitely the husky safari. Hearing the dogs howling with anticipation and then gliding across the snow was unforgettable. It’s peaceful, exhilarating and a little bit magical all at once.

Reindeer Encounter

Meeting Santa’s reindeer was the next big moment. Danny was convinced he found Rudolph, nose and all. The gentle sleigh ride that followed was incredibly charming the slow pace gives you time to appreciate the winter scenery and savour the moment

Elf Workshop & Snow Play

We visited the elves’ workshop, where the kids helped with festive crafts and giggled their way through the cheeky elf antics. Afterwards, we spent time outside making snow angels, sliding down hills, and soaking up that pure childhood joy that seems to flow effortlessly in Lapland.

Meeting Santa

Of course, the moment every family waits for: the private meeting with Santa. Even though I’ve heard clients describe this countless times, nothing prepared me for experiencing it with Ava and Danny. Santa was warm, gentle and wonderfully patient taking time to chat to the kids individually.

Santa's Elves

One of the unexpected highlights of our trip was the pair of elves assigned to our group, Dimples and Sprinkles. From the moment they greeted us at the airport, they set the tone for a wonderfully playful and light-hearted adventure. They had a gift for drawing the children in with games, silly jokes and little surprises throughout the day. On our final evening they organised a lively mini-disco, and Ava and Danny danced their hearts out. Even at the airport before our flight home, they kept the magic alive with colouring, face painting and fun challenges to keep all the little ones happily entertained. They even continued the games on the flight, making the journey home feel like part of the adventure rather than the end of it. Their energy and warmth added something truly special to the whole experience. We will never forget them

Why This Trip Meant So Much

As someone who has spent 10 years crafting Lapland holidays for others, living the adventure with my own family was incredibly special. It gave me a fresh perspective and a deeper appreciation for the little details that truly matter the smooth organisation, the thoughtful guides, the balance of activities and downtime, and most of all, the way the entire trip is crafted to make children believe in the magic of Christmas.

My Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever wondered whether Lapland is worth it, take it from someone who has planned these trips for a decade and now lived one personally, it absolutely is. The memories we made will stay with us forever. It’s a rare kind of holiday that blends adventure, enchantment and togetherness in a way few destinations can match.

If you’re thinking about making Lapland part of your family story, I’d be delighted to help you plan the perfect getaway with insights now grounded in both professional experience and personal joy.
