Luxury Cruising: Why Finding the Right Ship Makes All the Difference

My recent experience aboard Crystal Serenity, and my top tips for choosing your perfect luxury cruise.

Karen Thornton on 07 Sept 2026

I've recently returned from another wonderful Travel Counsellors Gold trip, this time experiencing life aboard the beautiful Crystal Serenity. And whilst I've been fortunate enough to enjoy some incredible travel experiences over the years, this one really reminded me just how special luxury cruising can be. It also reinforced something I always tell my clients: when it comes to cruising, choosing the right ship is every bit as important as choosing where you want to go. There are so many cruise lines, ships and itineraries available that it can be difficult to know where to start. And just because something is described as five-star or ultra-luxury doesn't automatically mean it's going to be the right fit for you.

My experience aboard Crystal Serenity

What impressed me most about Crystal was undoubtedly the exceptional food and service.

Crystal Serenity is a beautiful, elegant ship, carrying approximately 740 guests, with a wonderful sense of space and a level of personal attention that really makes you feel looked after.

The dining was a particular highlight. From beautifully presented meals to speciality restaurants, including Umi Uma by Nobu, the quality was exceptional.

And then there's the service. Attentive without being intrusive, friendly without being overly familiar, and with those thoughtful little touches that can make such a difference to your holiday.

Crystal also includes a generous selection of drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and butler service in every guest room and suite, creating a wonderfully relaxed onboard experience.

I came away genuinely impressed and would have no hesitation recommending Crystal to clients looking for this particular style of luxury cruising.

But would I recommend it to absolutely everyone? Not necessarily. And that's where knowing the differences between cruise lines becomes so important.

My top tips for choosing the right luxury cruise

1. Size really does matter!

One of the first things I consider when helping clients choose a cruise is the size of the ship.

Larger ships can offer an incredible choice of restaurants, entertainment, facilities and activities. If you enjoy having plenty to see and do, they can be fantastic.

Smaller luxury ships tend to offer a more intimate atmosphere, fewer guests and often access to smaller, less-visited ports.

Then there are the ships that sit somewhere in between, like Crystal Serenity, offering a lovely balance of space, facilities and personal service without feeling overwhelming.

There's no right or wrong answer. It's about understanding what you enjoy.

2. Choose the itinerary, not just the destination

It's easy to see an itinerary visiting somewhere like the Mediterranean or Caribbean and assume all cruises to that region will offer a similar experience.

They really don't!

I always look closely at the actual ports of call, how long the ship spends in each destination and whether there are overnight stays.

Some smaller ships can access ports that larger vessels simply cannot, whilst others may dock some distance from the destination you actually want to visit.

And don't forget to consider the balance of sea days and time ashore. Some people love relaxing onboard; others want to be exploring somewhere new every morning.

The right itinerary can make an enormous difference to your overall experience.

3. What does luxury mean to you?

This is probably one of the most important questions I ask.

For some, luxury means dressing up for dinner, enjoying fine dining and impeccable traditional service.

For others, it's a more contemporary, relaxed experience, with beautiful surroundings, fantastic food and no expectation to dress formally.

Some ships have a lively social atmosphere, whilst others are all about peace, privacy and relaxation.

Even within the luxury cruise market, the personalities of the different cruise lines can be surprisingly different.

It's about finding somewhere you'll feel completely comfortable.

4. Understand what's actually included

This is a big one!

Luxury cruising can initially appear expensive, but it's important to understand what you're getting for your money.

Depending on the cruise line and fare booked, inclusions might cover:

  • Speciality dining
  • Premium drinks and Champagne
  • Gratuities
  • Wi-Fi
  • Shore excursions
  • Laundry services
  • Butler service
  • Flights, transfers or pre-cruise hotel stays

Some cruise lines offer a genuinely extensive all-inclusive experience, whilst others charge separately for certain elements.

It's worth comparing the overall holiday cost rather than simply looking at the headline cruise fare.

A cruise that initially appears more expensive may actually represent better value once everything is taken into consideration.

5. Don't overlook your accommodation

Not all balcony cabins and suites are created equal!

Location, layout, outdoor space and the additional benefits associated with different accommodation categories can vary enormously.

Do you want a spacious suite with a separate living area? Is having your own private veranda essential? Would you prefer to be close to the restaurants and facilities, or somewhere particularly peaceful?

Even choosing the right deck and cabin position can make a difference.

These are all things worth considering before booking, rather than simply choosing a cabin based on price.

6. Think about how you want to spend your evenings

One of the lovely things about cruising is that your holiday doesn't stop when you return to the ship.

But evening entertainment varies considerably.

Some cruise lines offer large theatre productions, live music, dancing and plenty of late-night entertainment. Others focus on more intimate performances, relaxed lounges and sophisticated dining experiences.

Neither is better than the other, but getting this wrong could leave you feeling that something is missing from your holiday.

Why first-hand experience matters

Having worked in travel for over 30 years, I know that two holidays which look almost identical on paper can deliver completely different experiences.

That's one of the reasons I value opportunities like my recent Gold trip with Travel Counsellors so much.

Actually experiencing a ship, eating in its restaurants, meeting the crew and getting a feel for the atmosphere gives me a much better understanding of who I would recommend it to.

A brochure can tell you how many restaurants a ship has. It can't necessarily tell you how it feels to spend an evening onboard, whether the service is genuinely exceptional or what makes one cruise line different from another.

And those are often the details that matter most.

Thinking about your first luxury cruise, or perhaps trying something different?

Whether you're considering your very first cruise, celebrating a special occasion or looking to move from a larger ship to something more intimate, I'd love to help you explore the options.

There are some truly wonderful luxury cruise experiences available, from elegant ocean voyages to smaller ships visiting extraordinary destinations.

My job isn't simply to find you a cruise. It's to understand what you want from your holiday, explain the differences and help you find the ship, itinerary and experience that suits you.

Because the best luxury cruise isn't necessarily the biggest, smallest or most expensive.

It's the one that's right for you.
