Luxury River Cruising

I was fortunate to get the opportunity to travel with Uniworld and experience luxury on their new river cruise ship, the S.S. Victoria. Although our cruise was a short sailing, two nights whilst the ship repositioned on the Rhine, I packed a lot in!

This was also my first ever river cruise and it exceeded all my expectations. We arrived in Frankfurt, had a short 20 min drive to the port and the crew were waiting to welcome us onboard and into the incredible light filled lounge where we had a champagne reception before a ship tour.

From the moment I stepped aboard the SS Victoria, I was struck by how elegant and timeless the ship felt. It’s a gorgeous blend of vintage charm and modern luxury with rich, plush fabrics and classic design that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another era, but with all the comforts of today. My cabin, a Signature French Balcony, was very spacious with a panoramic floor-to-ceiling window that opened to a French-style balcony, offering stunning views of the river as we glided past quaint towns and beautiful landscapes. The bed (facing the window!) was the height of comfort and the marble bathroom was indulgent. Every detail in the room was well thought out, from the soft lighting to the elegant furnishings. The service was impeccable, housekeepers made sure my room was always spotless, and I always returned to fresh towels and little surprises like chocolates on my pillow.

Dining on the SS Victoria was another highlight. I’m a big foodie, so I was excited to see what the onboard restaurant had to offer. Breakfast and lunch were relaxed, with a buffet filled with so many fresh, delicious options from pastries and fresh fruit to local specialties. In the evening, we enjoyed beautifully plated gourmet meals. Each dinner was paired with wine, often from local vineyards, which really made me feel connected to the region we were visiting.

The SS Victoria's river cruise isn’t just about the ship, it’s about the experiences off the ship as well. On a typical day, passengers are treated to expertly curated excursions that bring the region’s rich history, culture and traditions to life. From guided walking tours of charming European cities to private concerts in grand palaces, every excursion is designed to enrich your journey. For those who want a more active experience, there are options like bike rides through scenic landscapes or hikes through vineyards. The excursions are thoughtfully planned, with local guides who offer fascinating insights into the history and culture of each destination.

On the top deck, there were sun beds and comfortable lounging sofas, as well as a neat little cocktail bar that sinks into the deck below when the ship has to pass under low bridges. The S.S. Victoria also offers unique amenities that distinguish it from other river ships, including a fitness centre, a small spa and a decent sized indoor pool. I took the early morning Yoga class which was due to take place on the top deck however for weather reasons it was moved to the pool deck.

The beauty of a river cruise is that you’re never far from land, each day brings new sights and adventures. Whether you’re sipping coffee on the deck while watching the sunrise over misty hills or enjoying a glass of wine as the ship glides through a vibrant city skyline at dusk, there's always something to take in. Ports are often in the heart of a city or village, allowing you to step off the ship and immediately explore local attractions, from cobblestone streets to UNESCO World Heritage sites.

I think a river cruise offers a perfect balance of exploration, relaxation and indulgence, making it an unforgettable way to experience the beauty and culture of the regions you visit.
